THE PROBLEM WITH METRO MANILA’S PEDESTRIAN

LANES

The truth remains that it takes at least three times as long as-and much more effort than-to only stroll
straight across the road like this (Schuengel, 2018). This argument reminds us that even if there is a
pedestrian lane and the vehicles and the pedestrians crossing the road have a limited time, the time
provided to the people is not enough because it takes much longer to cross the street or road than
just driving a vehicle. "In many countries, when a pedestrian is in some section of a designated cross-
walk, no car can pass until after the pedestrian is fully crossed," as reported by Michael Brown (2015).

ROAD SAFETY ISSUE NO. 5: Protecting the Filipino pedestrian

Pedestrian lanes or pedestrian crossings are marked traffic zones that allow individuals to cross from
one site to another. Typically, they are set to narrow the areas that pedestrians will cross in order to
deter injuries and traffic. However, there appears to be inadequate enforcement of this legislation.
Most motorists do not consider it. According to Tribdino (2016), road users are cyclists. This poses
high-risk safety issues for pedestrians everywhere in the world. Over 27,000 pedestrians die annually
in traffic accidents. The World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that 22 per cent of all road
traffic accidents are caused by pedestrians.

Traffic Solutions for Metro Manila: A Realistic Approach

Metro Manila traffic planners have relied almost entirely on volume management and engineering-
based congestion strategies for decades. It is not theoretically feasible to either minimize the number
of cars in the region or raise the amount of road space necessary to have any lasting effect on
congestion (i.e. larger highways, elevated roads, etc.). The first-stage solution to the congestion of
Manila traffic lies in terms of sheer cost efficiency, not in enhanced ability, but in charge of actions.
This is the smallest hanging fruit of all, but we just don't want to take advantage of it for whatever
reason. Either we encourage third-world traffic activity to persist to create the kind of expensive
congestion that we already have, or we want to enforce order and strengthen our traffic grid, our
infrastructure, and our credibility. The decision is painfully clear (Brown, 2012).

Pedestrian's needs matter: Examining Manila's walking

environment
In contrast to its developed city equivalent, emerging cities record greater walk shares. In their
pedestrian worlds, they often offer a strikingly different range of obstacles and opportunities. This
pedestrian-scale face-to - face study of one developing community has been inspired by the need to
deepen our awareness of environmental qualities that enable pedestrians to engage (or not) in
walking and walking-related events. A multilevel hierarchical tree was modelled on the issue of
identifying a healthy sidewalk setting. A collection of environmental characteristics that are
pedestrian needs-satisfiers have been defined for each pedestrian need. Each environmental attribute
will lead to one pedestrian need or several pedestrian needs being met. Con-text-specific
environmental characteristics are (Mateo-Babiano, 2012).

Synthesis

Pedestrian lanes are very important lanes in the world since many people and individuals cross these
lanes everyday in order to follow rules and have safety measures. Kids, like all pedestrians, can
cultivate a habit of watching and listening to the approaching cars before they cross the street.
Children can first look to the left, since it is the direction from which the first traffic will come.
Afterwards the children should look to the right and then to the left again be vigilant while they cross
the path. Pedestrians who have been involved in an accident may have the right to claim
compensation. Compensation is meant to help the survivor recover the damages suffered as a result
of the crash. These costs can include medical expenses, missed jobs, and pain. Therefore, we create
this research to help citizens to recover and limit accidents in road lanes.

Congestion is found in numerous parts of the world along different highways. The most frequent
forms of intersections on rural and urban roads are non-signalized intersections managed by Stop and
Yield signs. As they provide the basis for the network of arteries, collectors and local streets, national
highways are considered essential access to municipalities and cities in the Philippines.

Manila has the most unnecessary pedestrian lane that is why pedestrian protection is extremely
critical, and it can be shared with children long before they make their way into their classes at the
start of the new normal face-to-face classes. Of course, pedestrian safety is just half the fight. A
consideration beyond the influence of parents is drivers, who pose the greatest danger to pedestrian
safety. Therefore, when addressing pedestrian protection, pedestrians should stress continuous
caution. This research will help us to deduce minor accidents and incidents so that parents and
children will be go to school safely.
