LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Visual Arts 10
(Quarter 1, Week 1-2)
I. Introduction
Art is everywhere; we can see the richness and influences of this in our
surroundings as well as to our daily lives, from the colors of the walls, to the
art pieces decorated in every corner of our house, from the mix and match
color schemes of our own fashion styles to arts and designs that we can see
outside of our houses.
Art is a mixture of different influences not just in our own locality but
also with the help of our neighbouring Asian countries. Before the colonization
of western countries, Philippines have an active relationship with other Asian
nations in terms of commerce, wherein they do barter economy. As they
exchange products, they also give chance and opportunity to showcase
valuable things from their own locality such as jars, handicrafts, painted art
pieces, fabrics and the likes. Through this, Filipinos were exposed to different
art influences brought to them by Asian countries that up to this day, we can
see the remarkable contributions and influences in the Philippine arts.
Are excited to learn and discover the influences of other Asian countries
in our Philippine art? So what are you waiting for! Let’s start to turn back time
and have our journey for our lesson!

II. Learning Competency

Identifies Asian influences on various art forms both local and
international. (SPA_VA-AC10-Ia-1).

1
III. Objectives:
At the end of this learning activity sheet, you are expected to:
1. identify the Asian influences on various art forms in our country;
2. describe the influences of Asian countries the Philippine
contemporary art; and
3. appreciate the importance of these influences in the development of
Philippine contemporary art.

IV. Discussion

ASIAN INFLUENCES ON PHILIPPINE CONTEMPORARY ARTS

The trading and cultural contact of the Philippines and other neighboring
Asian countries greatly affect the art development of our country. Among those
Asian countries that influence our Philippine contemporary art the following:
Chinese, Japanese, India and Indonesia.

The Chinese art is visual art that, whether ancient or modern,

originated in or is practiced in China or by Chinese artists. The Chinese art in
the Republic of China (Taiwan) and that of overseas Chinese can also be
considered part of Chinese art where it is based in or draws on Chinese
heritage and Chinese culture. Traditional Chinese painting involves essentially
the same techniques as Chinese calligraphy and is done with a brush dipped in
black or colored ink; oils are not used. As with calligraphy, the most popular
materials on which paintings are made of paper and silk.
The two main techniques in Chinese painting are:
 Gongbi meaning "meticulous”. It uses highly detailed brushstrokes
that delimit details very precisely. It is often highly colored and
usually depicts figural or narrative subjects. It is often practiced by
artists working for the royal court or in independent workshops.
Bird-and-flower paintings were often in this style.

2
 Ink and wash painting or Shui-mo or also loosely termed water
color or black-ink brush painting, Ink wash painting uses tonality
and shading achieved by varying the ink density, both by
differential grinding of the ink stick in water and by varying the ink
load and pressure within a single brushstroke.

Aside from paintings, they also had a great influence in pottery making,
aside from its aesthetic content it was also used in many ways including jars
for the urn of their love ones.

The Japanese art covers a wide range of art styles and media, including
ancient pottery, sculpture, ink painting and calligraphy on silk and paper,
ukiyo-e paintings and woodblock prints, ceramics, origami, and more recently
manga which are modern Japanese cartoons and comics along with a myriad
of other types. Painting is the preferred artistic expression in Japan, practiced
by amateurs and professionals alike. Japanese wrote with a brush rather than
a pen, and their familiarity with brush techniques has made them particularly
sensitive to the values and aesthetics of painting. The subject matter that is
widely regarded as most characteristic of Japanese painting, and later
printmaking, is the depiction of scenes from everyday life and narrative scenes
that are often crowded with figures and detail.
 Ukiyo-e painting- is a genre of Japanese art which flourished from
the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock
prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties; kabuki
actors and sumo wrestlers; scenes from history and folk tales;
travel scenes and landscapes; flora and fauna; and erotica.

The Indian Arts- in India, all art like all life, is given over to religion.
Indian art is life, as interpreted by religion and philosophy. Indian art features
spirals and curvaceous lines, vines and tendrils or Kolams. They also use the
traditional folk art usually decorated on floors called Rangoli. Indians also
used the fresco painting technique with water based pigments and painted on
walls or ceilings using plasters.

Kolams Rangoli

The Indonesian Arts- the Indonesians belong to the Malay race but
most of them are Muslims. Although the Indonesians have embraced the Islam
religion, they still pay tribute to the Hindu Gods of the epics in the Wayang
Kulit. The Wayang Kulit stories are mostly taken from a Hindu epic,
Ramayana. Tells the story of Rama whose wife Sita is abducted by the king of
Sri Lanka, Ravana. Thematically, the Ramayana explores human values and
the concept of dharma. One of the famous art style used in Indonesia is the
Batik. It is made by allowing wax to drift on the cloth to produce different
designs. The designs make use of horizontal and vertical geometric patterns,
leaf and flower motifs, and birds and animal motifs.

4
The Traditional Indonesian Batik patterns
Because of the influences of these Asian countries in Philippine art, it
highly contributes on the development and flourished a different sense of
artworks. The use of decorative jars of the Chinese is highly recognizable in
every Filipino household; even the decorative paintings hanging on the walls for
aesthetic appreciations, the Japanese porcelains are also noticeable in every
special occasion as functional art pieces. The Indian Kolams and Rangoli were
usually used as decorative patterns in parol making in Pampanga as well as
the Batik textile patterns were used as decorations on fashion industries.
