Lesson 2 Unit Plan

Unit Title & Subject Area: Shipwreck, Cooperation & Decision Making

Grade Level: Junior High, Grades 5-8

Time: One week out of yearlong curriculum

State Standards:
● Standard Two: “The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts,
principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance (Kansas State,
D. (2020)”
● Standard Four: “The physically literate individual exhibits responsible personal and social
behavior that respects self and others (Kansas State, D. (2020)”

Unit Rationale: In this unit students will learn how to cooperate and strategize without being
able to speak to one another. Another thing that students will learn is how to make relationships
with students that they may not be personally close with.

Goals: The major key of this unit is quick decision making. Making decisions in a split second
can be useful for the students outside of gym class as well as in. In the classroom and in this
activity students are walking randomly throughout the gym and must create groups or pairs
before the other students do. Outside of the gym, students can use this when they might be in a
tough position and need to make a right and safe choice.

Objectives: Students will be able to explain how important communication and decision making
can be when making a tough decision or when put in a sticky situation. Another objective is that
the students will be able to explain the importance of cooperating with others and how important
working with others can be when trying to create a solution.

Lessons/Main Activities: This lesson unit will only last one week instead of two like most units
will be. There will be various games and activities that the students will partake in during the
week. In order to reach each individual students’ strengths we will do different warmup activities,
and small group games. The main lesson of this unit is decision making and to strengthen the
students' skills I will present them with multiple games where they must use their decision
making skills in order to succeed in the games being played.

Assessment Measurement: Students will be assessed on how well they use the skills that are
taught in the various games and group activities. In this particular lesson students would be
assessed on their ability to cooperate with others in the class as well as participating 100% and
being able to use those quick decision making skills to create groups or pairs to play the game.
Differentiated Instruction Anticipated: This game can be modified for a student who may
have a physical or mental disability. One example could be, if a student is deaf you could modify
how you call the commands. You can have the students all stay on a volleyball or basketball line
on the gym floor but must stay facing towards the front of the gym. Along with this you can have
a white board with the different command numbers and you hold up the board instead of yelling
out the command. This modification allows the student the same opportunities to see the
command as the rest of the students, as well as give them a fair shot of grouping up with
different students.
