Sensory Experience

Class average age (in months)

● Twenty-Two months

Primary Objective

● Nineteen to Twenty Four Months, Scientific Exploration and Learning, cause and effect

Secondary Objective(s)

● Nineteen to Twenty Four Months, Scientific Exploration and Learning, ingretate use of

senses to explore the natural world/ explore and attempt different ways to make objects

move

Experience description

● Children will be given ziplock bags that are filled with orbeez and water (each bag

having a different color) to move around and squeeze allowing them to feel the

squishiness of the beads and see the effects their actions cause on the orbeez.

Materials

● Orbeez, water, Ziplock bags

Scaffolding (child’s prior knowledge to build on):

● Children will know that water moves around and with this activity, they will see the

effects of moving around water when there are objects floating inside. They will also be
given a chance to correlate the appearance of a squishy obeeze with the feeling of

squeezing them.

Plan for carrying out experience (what caregiver will do)

● I will introduce the activity to the children and invite two to three of them at a time to

participate if they want to. I will provide them with various bags with different colors

(while naming the colors I have) and allow them to choose which bag they would like to

play with. I will show them that they can jiggle the bag, tilt it, squeeze it, or squish an

individual orbeez if they would like to. As they begin to fondle the bag, I will describe

the different outcomes that happen with their actions to help them understand what had

happened while introducing new vocabulary. An example would be if they were to

squeeze, I can tell them that by squeezing the orbeez they made it separate into smaller

pieces or if they were to jiggle the orbeez on the table, I will describe how the orbeez

moved with the water as they did that.

Assessment

A. How would you be able to determine the success of this activity?

● I would determine the success of this activity if the children were actively participating

and engaged consistently jiggling, tilting, or squeezing the bag and looking at the effects

that they created and showing great curiosity.

B. Do you feel children's knowledge base will change after this experience? (Do I see new

knowledge being learned in other areas?)

● I believe that this activity will help expand their knowledge on cause and effects seeing

how the water will move with each jerk of their hand and how the items floating in the

water will also be affected. This activity will also help their sensory development by

allowing them to feel the squishy orbeez in their hands and see how they can fall apart if

they are squeezed. They can also see the appearance of the beads and correlate them with

how it feels.
