This document provides three activities to help children learn counting and addition: using markers by counting out a number of markers and adding more if needed; using snacks by having children measure and add to a desired amount; and using shapes by having children count groups of shapes and combine the totals. The activities aim to help children gather tools for their math journey and develop an understanding of numbers.

THE ACTION WITH THESE ACTIVITIES! THEY WILL GATHER THE NECESSARY TOOLS TO BEGIN THEIR MATH JOURNEY AND DEVELOP AN UNDERSTANDING OF HOW NUMBERS WORK.
MARKERS! PLACE A PILE OF MARKERS IN THE CENTER
OF A TABLE AND ASK, "HOW MANY MARKERS WILL IT TAKE FOR ME TO GET ___?" HAVE THE CHILD HAND YOU THE AMOUNT OF MARKERS THEY BELIEVE IS CORRECT. TO INCREASE DIFFICULTY, YOU CAN ALREADY HAVE SOME MARKERS WITHIN YOUR HANDS AND ASK "HOW MANY MORE DO I NEED TO GET ___?"
SNACK TIME! ASK YOUR CHILD HOW MANY PIECES OF
FOOD THEY WANT AND THEY CAN MEASURE THE AMOUNT IN A SMALL BAGGIE. TO INCREASE DIFFICULTY, YOU MAY PREVIOUSLY ADD FOOD INTO A BAGGIE AND ASK IF THEY CAN KEEP IT THE SAME OR ADD MORE SNACKS INTO THE BAGGIE TO REACH THE GOAL AMOUNT.
SHAPES! CUT OUT DIFFERENT SHAPES AND ASK YOUR
CHILD TO COUNT HOW MANY THERE ARE IN ONE GROUP (EX:HOW MANY HEARTS) AND HOW MANY THERE ARE IN ANOTHER (EX: CIRCLES) AND IF THEY PUT THE GROUPS TOGETHER, HOW MUCH WOULD THEY HAVE TOTAL?
