BTS GPS Synchronization Feature Parameter Description 2 Overview

2 Overview

2.1 Introduction
The GPS is a round-the-clock satellite navigation system that communicates with a BTS in
wireless mode. The GPS provides accurate three-dimensional location, velocity, and time for
worldwide users. The BTS GPS Synchronization feature enables a BTS clock to be
synchronized with the GPS clock source. After the BTS is synchronized with the GPS, the
error of the frame synchronization over the Um interface is smaller than one bit. Therefore,
frequency reuse is improved and the interference is decreased in the wireless network.
Converting an asynchronous network into a synchronous network can effectively reduce the
interference, increase the network capacity, and improve the performance of the KPIs related
to the radio network.

BTS GPS Synchronization Feature Parameter Description 3 Technical Description

3 Technical Description

In the GSM, the clock among BTSs is asynchronous, which causes overlap of timeslots. In an
asynchronous network where frequency reuse occurs at short intervals, overlap of timeslot
causes unnecessary and unpredictable interference that cannot be prevented. The interference
will become a bottleneck that restricts network capacity. Therefore, the BTS uses the GPS
clock source for clock synchronization over the network.

NOTE

The dual-mode satellite card installed on the USCU of Huawei BTS supports Global Navigation
Satellite System (GLONASS) clock synchronization. The principle of GLONASS clock synchronization
is the same as that of GPS clock synchronization. Unless otherwise specified, GPS clock
synchronization in this document includes GLONASS clock synchronization.
For details about the other clock synchronization modes and basic concepts about synchronization, see
Synchronization Feature Parameter Description.

3.1 GPS Clock Synchronization Process

Figure 3-1 illustrates the process of the GPS clock synchronization solution.

GSM BSS
BTS GPS Synchronization Feature Parameter Description 3 Technical Description

Figure 3-1 GPS clock synchronization solution

l GPS clock synchronization works as follows:

a. The GPS receiver, working on the 1575.42 MHz frequency band, receives standard
universal time coordinated (UTC)-based clock signals from satellites, and sends the
signals to the GPS satellite card on the USCU board or DGPS.
b. The GPS satellite card processes received signals to obtain absolute GPS time and
precise 1PPS clock signals and transmits the obtained information to the BTS main
control board.
c. The clock module of the BTS main control board compares the received clock
signals and those generated by the local oscillator and adjusts the local oscillator
frequency in real time based on the frequency offset. In addition, the clock module
performs phase-locking and frequency division on the clock signals provided by the
local oscillator and generates various clock signals required by the BTS. The BTS
main control board also calculates the absolute frame number based on the received
absolute GPS time, and uses the calculation result as a reference to adjust the BTS
frame number.
d. The BTS main control board distributes clock signals to the other BTS boards.
l Full training sequence code (TSC) alignment achieved after network time
synchronization may cause demodulation performance deterioration. If this occurs,
modify the value of FRAMEBITOFFSET (BSC6900, BSC6910) for sites with the same
frequency and TSC, to eliminate performance deterioration. For example, if the same
frequency and TSC interference are configured for two BTSs, set FRAMEBITOFFSET
(BSC6900, BSC6910) to 0 and 80 for the sites, respectively.

3.2 Advantages and Disadvantages of GPS Clock

Synchronization
Advantages
l The GPS clock synchronization solution can be used for time synchronization and
frequency synchronization.
l The GPS clock synchronization solution can accurately provide the UTC-based time.

Disadvantages
l The GPS clock synchronization solution requires each base station to be equipped with a
GPS reference receiver, which increases the overall capital expenditure (CAPEX).
l The GPS antenna requires the field angle of 45º of the centrum to be clear from
obstacles. Therefore, the antenna site selection becomes limited.
l Feeders need to be installed between the GPS antenna and the BTS. In the case of a
complicated construction venue or building, feeder installation can be difficult. In
addition, feeder installation requires the consent of both the house owners and the
property management authorities, and therefore the negotiation may be challenging.
NOTE

For details about how to install the GPS satellite antenna system on the BTS side, see GPS Satellite
Antenna System Quick Installation Guide. You can find this document by visiting the website http://
support.huawei.com and then choose Support > Documentation > Wireless > Antenna Feeder >
Antenna & Feeder System.

BTS GPS Synchronization Feature Parameter Description 4 Engineering Guidelines

4 Engineering Guidelines

4.1 Network Planning

The network planning for BTS GPS Synchronization consists of planning for inter-site
distance, frame offset, frequency hopping (FH) parameters, and training sequence codes
(TSCs). Inappropriate planning will cause network KPIs (such as the call drop rate) to
deteriorate.
l Inter-site distance
If the inter-site distance in the area to be synchronized is too long, signals transmitted on
different timeslots arrive at the receive end at the same time. This causes extra
interference and increases the overall network interference. Therefore, keep the inter-site
distance within an appropriate range during network planning.
l FN offset
After Soft-Synchronized Network is implemented, all the cells on the network have the
same Um FN at the same time, and all the timeslots are synchronized.
When the timeslots on the network change and become asynchronous, network
performance is negatively affected. The changes in Um-interface timeslots cause obvious
signaling channel reuse. This negatively affects neighboring cell searching by an MS
during a call. In addition, MSs send messages over the SACCHs at the same time. This
increases the interference on the SACCH and increases the probability of a call drop over
the radio link, thereby negatively affecting network performance. When the network is
synchronized, fixed frame offset adjustment is used to prevent signaling channel reuse.
FRAMEOFFSET (BSC6900, BSC6910) is planned and configured by cluster, and each
cluster consists of 13 BTSs. Frame offsets are planned uniformly for cells under the
same BTS, preventing the preceding problem.
l FH parameters
In common FH networks, Soft-Synchronized Network is not implemented between
BTSs, and each BTS has a unique hopping sequence number (HSN). Therefore, co- and
adjacent-channel interference is not caused in a BTS, but co-channel interference is
caused between codirectional cells under different BTSs. To reduce the co-channel
interference, co-channel interference can be changed to adjacent-channel interference by
relying on synchronized networks when network interference is controllable. Then, you
can take other measures to lower the probability of adjacent-channel interference
occurring, thereby mitigating interference in a network.

GSM BSS
BTS GPS Synchronization Feature Parameter Description 4 Engineering Guidelines

In synchronized networks, adjust the parameters related to random FH in a way different

from asynchronous networks.
l TSCs/BCCs
After network synchronization is complete, timeslots are aligned, increasing the impact
of interference. If TSCs or base station color codes (BCCs) are planned inappropriately,
the probability of intra-frequency same-TSC collisions increases, causing the number of
call drops due to sequence errors to increase. As a result, the call drop rate increases.
Proper planning of TSCs or BCCs helps reduce the impact of interference on voice
quality. For frequency hopping (FH) networks, appropriately plan TSCs (the
TSCPLANEN (BSC6900, BSC6910) parameter must be set to YES(Yes)); for non-FH
networks, appropriately plan BCCs.
– Comply with the following rule during TSC/BCC planning:
During frequency planning, especially for an FH network using the 1x1 or 1x3
frequency reuse pattern, TCH frequency collisions are likely to occur. Therefore,
plan the TSCs/BCCs with eight BTSs forming a frequency reuse cluster, and each
BTS uses a unique TSC/BCC. During frequency planning, BTSs served by the
same BCCH frequency must use different base transceiver station identity codes
(BSICs). If this rule conflicts with the preceding TSC/BCC planning rule, modify
the network color code (NCC) if allowed to ensure that the BTSs served by the
same BCCH frequency use different BSICs.
– TSC/BCC orthogonality
During TSC/BCC planning, orthogonal TSCs/BCCs bring a positive impact on
network performance.
