includes the following changes.
2 Overview
2.1 Introduction
The GPS is a round-the-clock satellite navigation system that communicates with a BTS in
wireless mode. The GPS provides accurate three-dimensional location, velocity, and time for
worldwide users. The BTS GPS Synchronization feature enables a BTS clock to be
synchronized with the GPS clock source. After the BTS is synchronized with the GPS, the
error of the frame synchronization over the Um interface is smaller than one bit. Therefore,
frequency reuse is improved and the interference is decreased in the wireless network.
Converting an asynchronous network into a synchronous network can effectively reduce the
interference, increase the network capacity, and improve the performance of the KPIs related
to the radio network.

NOTE
√ indicates that the NE supports this feature. × indicates that the NE does not support this feature.
3 Technical Description
In the GSM, the clock among BTSs is asynchronous, which causes overlap of timeslots. In an
asynchronous network where frequency reuse occurs at short intervals, overlap of timeslot
causes unnecessary and unpredictable interference that cannot be prevented. The interference
will become a bottleneck that restricts network capacity. Therefore, the BTS uses the GPS
clock source for clock synchronization over the network.
NOTE
The dual-mode satellite card installed on the USCU of Huawei BTS supports Global Navigation
Satellite System (GLONASS) clock synchronization. The principle of GLONASS clock synchronization
is the same as that of GPS clock synchronization. Unless otherwise specified, GPS clock
synchronization in this document includes GLONASS clock synchronization.
For details about the other clock synchronization modes and basic concepts about synchronization, see
Synchronization Feature Parameter Description.
Disadvantages
l The GPS clock synchronization solution requires each base station to be equipped with a
GPS reference receiver, which increases the overall capital expenditure (CAPEX).
l The GPS antenna requires the field angle of 45º of the centrum to be clear from
obstacles. Therefore, the antenna site selection becomes limited.
l Feeders need to be installed between the GPS antenna and the BTS. In the case of a
complicated construction venue or building, feeder installation can be difficult. In
addition, feeder installation requires the consent of both the house owners and the
property management authorities, and therefore the negotiation may be challenging.
NOTE
For details about how to install the GPS satellite antenna system on the BTS side, see GPS Satellite
Antenna System Quick Installation Guide. You can find this document by visiting the website http://

Step 2 Run the SET BTSUSCUBP command with CFGFLAG set to YES(YES), to set USCU
parameters. Set the feeder type and length, GPS working mode, and antenna power supply
switch as required.
Step 3 Run the SET BTSCLK command with ClkType set to TRCGPS_CLK(Trace GPS Clock).
Step 4 Run the SET BTSOTHPARA command with SYNCMETHOD set to GPS(GPS
Synchronization).
Step 5 (Optional) If the same frequency and TSC interference are configured for two BTSs, and the
BTS time is synchronized with each other, perform the following operations:
l Run the SET BTSCLK command with FRAMEBITOFFSET of one BTS set to 0.
l Run the SET BTSCLK command with FRAMEBITOFFSET of the other BTS set to
80.
NOTE
FRAMEBITOFFSET takes effect only when it is set to a value ranging from 0 to 80. If it is set to a
value ranging from –1 to –80, the BTS determines that no frequency offset exists. The values 0 and 80
are used as an example in the above configuration.

When configuring the BTS GPS Synchronization feature on the CME, perform a single configuration
first, and then perform a batch modification if required. Configure the parameters of a single object
before a batch modification. Perform a batch modification before logging out of the parameter setting
interface.
----End
Step 1 Run the LST BTSCLK command to check whether the correct clock source is configured.
Step 2 Run the DSP BTSATTR command to check whether the clock source is available.

neighboring cells do not appear in the same frame,
which is helpful for the coding of an MS. If the value
of this parameter is 0, the cell is not offset. If the value
is 255, this parameter is not sent. If the parameter is
set to a value except for 0 and 255, the handover of

BTS3002C and double-transceiver BTSs, the frame
offset can be predicted according to the value of this
parameter.
