LIST-GROUP-LABEL ACTIVITY

Objective:

By the end of the lesson students, working in peer workgroups, will be able to connect key
concepts of reconstruction era sharecroppers thought a Popplet mind map.

Introduction:

Introduce the concept of the Freedmen and how the transition from slave to working citizen
went during the early stages of reconstruction.

Ask key questions:

What is home economics?

Did slaves earn money?

What would you do if you had been enslaved your whole life and were suddenly free?

How would you survive?

Activity:

Students will take a few minutes to type/write down some takeaways from the introduction

Students will read the document on http://historymatters.gmu.edu/d/6369 and type/write


down at least 10 key words or concepts that feel important.

Breakout room!

In a separate window, one student will generate a word cloud


(https://www.jasondavies.com/wordcloud/) from each student’s list of terms and words. Each
student’s words, including repeats, need to be added. Example:

Students will then open Popplet and link 10 of the most common phrases/words and explain,
through new popples, their connections to one another. Example:

Near the end of class, students will share their screens and present their word clouds and
Popplet and explain their terms, their connections to one another, and their overall conclusions
on what the transition from slavery to Freedmen would have been like for the former slaves and
the new struggles they would have faced
