1. Overview of HI&I Cleaning Formulation Guide

This guide is a collection of HI&I (Household, Industrial & Institutional) cleaning formulations
developed by several ISP scientists over the last 10 years. The main purpose of these
formulations was to prepare and test different types of cleaners in order to measure the
benefits of various ISP specialties in many diverse HI&I applications. Thus, most
formulations were developed and tested to measure specific properties and features, without
any attempt to have a complete evaluation of long-term stability and performance in the
manner that commercial cleaners are tested before introduction to the consumer market.

With this background in mind, this guide is not intended as a comprehensive treatise on the
complex subject of cleaning formulations. Even within a specific cleaning category, the
number of possible formulations is quite extensive due to differences in water conditions,
regional regulations, consumer preferences, performance, affordability, and marketing
strategies. As it is impossible to cover all these combinations, this formulation guide
documents one to three representative formulations for each cleaning category, that in some
cases are specific to the geographic region where the formulation was originally developed
and tested.

This guide can be used as a starting reference tool for sales engineers as well as formulators
that want to examine how ISP specialties are employed in different cleaning formulations. It
is strongly recommended that formulators use many other sources and ideas to develop,
optimize and test their cleaning formulas. Considering the broad nature of cleaning
formulations around the globe, it is quite unlikely that any of the formulations found in this
guide can be used “as is” without any modifications or additional testing. Thus, we
encourage scientists and engineers to use this guide as a starting point in their quest for
better cleaning formulations and products.

This guide was developed as a collective effort with significant contributions from many ISP
scientists around the world. Most of the formulations included in this guide are credited to
the following individuals:

Americas: Frank Fusiak Michael Jurek Purvita Shah

Europe: Jon Virgoe Rob Gibbison J.J. Gulka

Asia-Pacific: Siaw-Ee Loh T.L. Tan

Editor: Sotiri A. Papoulias

Additional Formulation Information

Detergency is provided by a blend of DDBS and SLS surfactants.

Amine oxide acts as a foam stabilizer / booster, and may in addition help to reduce the skin
irritation potential of the DDBS.

Surfadone LP-100 improves the wetting performance of the aqueous solution, aids the
penetration and solubilization of greasy soils and in conjunction with the other surfactants
increases the viscosity of the product, removing the need for electrolyte or thickeners.

Formulation Information
The two Synperonic LFRA surfactants (Fatty Alcohol EO/PO adducts of proprietary formula)
have been selected to give a blend of wetting and defoaming properties. The blend properties
can be altered by varying the ratio of wetting (LFRA 30) & defoaming (LFRA 260) ingredients.
Surfadone LP-100 acts in combination with the nonionic blend to greatly reduce the surface
tension of the formulation when dispersed in aqueous solution, and hence improve the
potential of this solution to form a continuous thin film on the surface of the rinsed items. This
in turn reduces the drying time, and helps to reduce the amount of streaking and smearing
seen on the dried articles. Surfadone LP-100 has no effect on the amount of foaming caused
by the formulation.
Sodium Cumene Sulphonate acts as a Hydrotrope, to ensure that the cloud point of the
formulation is high enough to prevent separation occurring under warm conditions.

Additional Formulation Information

The two surfactants provide a range of detergency properties - wetting, foaming etc. The nonionic
is particularly effective on oils and greases, providing soil removal and emulsification properties
and helping to prevent redeposition.

Surfadone LP-300 acts in conjunction with the surfactants, improving the wetting properties, and
aiding the penetration of the surfactants into the soils. The solvents increase the cleaning effect by
helping to dissolve hydrophobic soils. The glycol ethers offer anti-redeposition properties.

The complexing agent (NTA) improves the tolerance of the formulation (particularly the anionic
surfactant) to the presence of water hardness ions. In addition, it improves the cleaning effect,
notably on particulate soils.

Additional Formulation Information

Surface activity is provided by the combination of the nonionic surfactant and the Surfadone
LP-300, giving the formulation the ability to wet greasy surfaces. Surfadone LP-300 has also
the ability to penetrate into oily and greasy soils, thus helping to dislodge them from the
surfaces.
Once in solution, the M-Pyrol, Surfadone LP-300 and the nonionic surfactant in combination
with the alkalinity from the MEA act to solubilize and emulsify the soils to leave a clean
surface.
Gantrez S97-BF is present to add viscosity to the formulation, helping it to “cling” to the
surfaces being cleaned and hence maximize the contact time.

Additional Formulation Information

Isopropyl alcohol and glycol ether give the volatility necessary for fast drying.

MgLES aids wetting of the surface. Tests show that the magnesium salts are more efficient than
the corresponding sodium salts in reducing the amount of streaking or smearing. Nitrogenous
buffers (in this case MEA) also help in this regard. Ammonia as a co-buffer aids removal of
greasy soils, and is also easily volatilized, promoting streak-free appearance.

Surfadone LP-300 acts as a co-solvent for removing greasy soils, and in addition promoting the
solubility of fragrances where necessary. The tremendous wetting power of Surfadone LP-300 in
conjunction with the anionic enables excellent coverage of the surface to be achieved whilst using
very low levels of non-volatile components - reducing the amount of smearing and streaking.

The acidic nature of the formulation aids in the break-down and dissolution of hardness salt
based soils, such as limescale and soap scum.

Detergency and surface activity are provided by the combination of the amine oxide and
Sufadone LP-100. The amine oxide also acts as a coupler for the formulation - it has been
found that if the amount of coupler used is increased to more than is actually necessary to
solubilize the other ingredients, a remarkable increase in the cleaning ability of the formulation
is observed.

It has also been observed that the Surfadone LP100 has the ability to reduce soap scum
deposition on surfaces.

The quaternary ammonium chloride is present to give the formulation a bactericidal effect.

Additional Formulation Information

Detergency is provided by the blend of nonionic and anionic surfactants. The acidic nature of the
formulation aids in the break down and dissolution of hardness salt based soils, such as limescale and
soap scum.
The combination of phosphoric acid, carboxylic acid and Surfadone LP100 protects certain surfaces
from acid etching. It is suggested that a complex forms, which can attach to negatively charged
surfaces and hence reduce acid attack. Surfadone LP100 addition reduces the soap scum deposition

The inclusion of magnesium ions and the fragrance are necessary to enable a microemulsion
to form. The levels of the two can be varied - in addition the type of fragrance used will also affect the
amount required for the microemulsion to form. It has also been suggested that the inclusion of a small
amount of magnesium ions improves the cleaning efficiency of the product, particularly in soft water
areas.

Additional Formulation Information

Various simple modifications of the above formula should produce a polish which would
satisfy all product requirements. Durability of the polished film may be changed with the type
of abrasive used together with wax constituent variations. The gloss of the polished film may
be enhanced with the addition of silicone oil, variation of the wax constituent, or variations in
the oil content. Finally, drying time may be altered by the addition of mineral spirits.

The percentage of KELGIN HV required should remain relatively constant for most
modifications of the given formula, but in a few cases it may be necessary to alter the quantity
slightly to obtain the desired results. It is suggested that the 0.5% level is tried first and then,
if necessary, altered in the direction indicated.
