Energy Conservation in Electrical drives

Why we need energy conservation in Electric Drives

Energy conservation in Illumination
Energy conservation in Illumination

• For street light, use of anodized aluminium reflectors can improve

the lighting level by 20-25%.
Energy conservation in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning
• Building Heat Loads Minimization: minimize the air
conditioning loads by measures such as roof cooling, roof
painting, efficient lighting, pre-cooling of fresh air by air-
to-air heat exchangers, variable volume air system, optimal
thermo-static setting of temperature of air conditioned
spaces, sun film applications etc.
• Cold Insulation: Insulate all cold lines / vessels by using
insulation of required thickness to minimize heat gains and
choose appropriate (correct) insulation.
• Frequent cleaning / de-scaling of all heat exchangers.
• Increase Heat transfer area to accept higher temperature
coolant.
• Ensure regular maintenance of all AC plant components as
per manufacturer guidelines.
Energy conservation in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning
• Clean the thermostat regularly and replace it if necessary.
• Avoid changing the thermostat settings once it is fixed as change of
the temperature setting for lower temperature results in an extra 3-
4% of power consumption in every degree change in temperature.
• Routine inspection of refrigerant leaks.
• Regular Checking the compressor operating pressures.
• Building Envelope: Curtains/ blinds /sun film on windows reduces
heat input into the room. Insulating the ceiling, which is exposed to
the sun with thermocole reduces heat input into the room.
• Adoption of energy efficient heat recovery devices like air to air heat
exchangers to precool the fresh air by indirect heat exchange.
• Control of relative humidity through indirect heat exchange rather
than use of duct heaters after chilling
Energy Conservation in Electric Heating
• Optimization of heating circuits :
Reducing heat loss along the pipes by insulating water pipes or air
flues, especially in unheated areas (ducting, boiler rooms, service
areas).
Reduce the electricity consumption of pumps or fans by using
variable speed drives to maintain required speed according to the
requirement.
• Use heat pumps alone or in combination with a boiler.
• Use solar heating in places with good exposure (orientation) and
sufficient heat is available for the installation of the solar panels.
• Use of ‘Intelligent’ time-switches to ensure the optimal operating
period by switching on/off the heating system according to the
requirement.
Energy Conservation in Electric Traction
• Energy conservation by switching off of standby transformers.
• Shutting down off the locomotives in trip-sheds, fright sheds yards &
enroute for more than 30 minutes.
• Switching off blowers whenever the train is stopped for more than 5
minutes.
• Extensive usage of regenerative braking for trains working with three
phase locos.
• Use of Capacitor banks for improvement of power factor and
maintain the power factor near to 0.95 in traction sub-stations.
• Regular energy audit of traction sub-station and its implementation.
• Implementation of SCADA for better supervision and control of utility
grid.
• Introduction of Smart grid technologies.
• Provide Energy efficient LED lights in Railway coaches/EMU.
