DATE: 14/2/2019 GROUP NO.:5

DAY: TUESDAY NAME: PRIYANK GODHAT

EXPERIMENT NO.: 3 ID:2017A2PS0856P

AIM OF THE STUDY:

The aim of the following test is to determine the Flakiness Index and Elongation Index for the given
aggregate sample.

RELEVANT STANDARDS:
The procedure of the following experiments and the apparatus required for the above experiments are
standardized according to IS-2386 (PART I) 1963.

RELEVANCE AND IMPORTANCE:

Aggregate have different shape and sizes. The packing of the aggregates and the strength of the course
aggregates greatly depend upon the shape of the aggregates. If the aggregate is very thin or very long,
they can easily break during mixing and can adversely affect the strength of the mix. So in the concrete
mix flaky and elongated particles are avoided.

Flakiness Index: An aggregate is said to be flaky if its thickness is less than 0.6 times its mean
dimension. The thickness of the aggregates are checked by passing them from a thickness gauge and the
particles passing from the gauge are weighted. Flakiness index is measured as the percentage of the
weights of the passed aggregates to the total weight of aggregates.

Elongation Index: An aggregate is said to be elongated if its length is more than 1.8 times its mean
dimension. The aggregates are passed from a length gauge and the weight of the particles retained is
recorded. Elongation index is measured as the percentage of the weight of the retained aggregates to the
weight of total aggregates.
