Experiment Proposal 1.

Aim:
Analysis of factors affecting temperature distribution around the cube model
Experimental setup:
Three sets of experiments are sought to be conducted.
Set: 1
The first set consists of constant confining temperature around the model, constant confining
pressure, constant flow rate but varying water injection temperature. The aim is to investigate
how the temperature variation affects the temperature distribution around the model.
Procedure:
 A constant water injection rate of about 20 ml/min (or any other value from 10 ml/min up
to 35 ml/min) is applied through the injection face in-contact with fractures.
 A constant heat source temperature is maintained throughout the experiment. (120 C)
 A constant confining pressure is maintained thought the experiment (3MPa)
 Various injection temperature are considered;
o Injection temperature of about 30 C, 60 C, 90C.

NOTE:
Since the equipment set lacks heating systems along the line, and we need to estimate the
temperature loss until water reaches the sample; we suggest a technique to measure the
temperature loss. We calculate the temperature difference between the Pumped water and
injected water to obtain a set of temperature loss that will allow us to adjust the initial boiling
temperature from the source.
Set: 2
In this set of experiment we shall investigate how the confining pressure affects the temperature
distribution. From theory we know that the extent of matrix and fracture expansion and
contraction might be affected by the stress around that block. In this case that stress is taken as
the confining pressure around the block.
Procedure;
 Water at constant injection rate at constant temperature is supplied on one side of the
block (20 ml/min at temperature of 60C)
 The heat source temperature is maintained constant at (120 C)
 Three different values of confining pressure are used
o Three values of confining pressure are used during the experiments (0 MPa, 3
MPa and 6 MPa)
Set: 3
This set of experiment aims at investigating the effect of injection pattern and injection volume
on temperature distribution on the rock matrix. The experiments include variation of injection
rates and variation of injection pattern for the same rate.
Procedure:
 The heat source is maintained at 120C
 Water injection temperature is maintained constant 60C
 The confining pressure is maintained at a constant value i.e. 6MPa
 Various experiments are conducted with different sets of injection flow rates
 Injection volume; (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 ml/min)
 Test of pulse injection
