Introduction Time
Attention Grabber Introduce yourself and your project! :) You are Kit Zachery and you have
met them briefly when you supervised a lab when Mrs. Pickerell was busy. 3mins
You are an intern teacher, and you are currently studying at the University

of Lethbridge. As part of your internship, you are doing a research project
on body image and disordered eating in teenagers. You are hoping to find
out what they know and don’t know, help educate them on these topics,
and see if education can help either prevent an eating disorder from
developing OR if it can help students help themselves or others find
support, seek treatment, and recover.
Assessment of Prior The first step of this project is to find out what you do and don’t know
Knowledge about disordered eating. To do so, everyone will fill out a survey :)
Ask everyone to join your Google Classroom (code: ikrthia).

The survey is at the top, and should take about 10-15mins to complete. It is
ANONYMOUS! I have NO clue who says what, and I never will know.
Please be honest in the survey.
10-15mins
It is also not about being right. If you don’t know an answer, just say you
don’t know and move on.

Also note that participation in the survey is optional. If you are not
comfortable being a part of the research, that is perfectly. However, it
would be greatly appreciated if everyone did participate! :)

Give the students 10-15mins to do the survey.

Transition to Body Ask everyone to put their chromebooks (or phones) away, as you are now
moving on. You are going to talk a bit about body image, and then talk 2mins
about the guest speaker we are having next class.
Body Time
Learning Activity #1 Watch the following two videos:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5mP5RveA_tk (5mins)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dF-9-wQpOzg (end at 4:04mins)

Then, as a class, discuss the following:

10-12mins
Are men and women really so different?
Why do men typically not discuss body image insecurities?
Why are women typically more open talking about it?
How does social media impact our body image?
How is it different for men and women?

Closure Time
Consolidation of Learning: Next class (Monday), we are going to have a guest speaker attend via
ZOOM.

Her name is Dr. Stephanie Cassin, and she is a registered clinical and
health psychologist, as well as an associate professor of Psychology at
Ryerson University. She is the Director of the Healthy Eating and Lifestyle
Lab, and she specializes in body image, disordered eating, and more.
10mins
We are very, very lucky to have her be a guest speaker for us. She is a very
important person in the field of psychology, and is one of the most
established professionals in the topics of body image and disordered
eating. She has volunteered to teach the lesson, because she knows how
important these topics are in teenagers!

It is very important that we are respectful AND engaged in class on
Monday.

So, think of a question you have about body image or disordered eating,
and tell me what it is. If you are comfortable saying it aloud, I will write it
down. If you prefer to do it anonymously, there is a Google Form in the
classroom that you can fill out.

Before students leave, ask for at least three volunteers to ask a question
on Monday. They can ask their own question, or you can give them one to
ask. All they have to do is ask it at the end of her presentation!

Reflections from the

lesson
Feedback from/to
students, what to do next
time, what went well, what
needs improvement, etc.
