Recognizing Genre
What is poetry?

Poetry is expressing one’s feelings and ideas by writing phrases using a special style,
rhythm, or other structure. People who write poems are called poets. Poetry is written
in lines which can be a sentence, phrase, or single word. A stanza is one or more lines
of poetry and is similar to a paragraph in other types of writing. Poems can be as short
as a few lines or stanzas, or as long as several hundred pages. Most poetry focuses on
capturing the emotion of an event or experience by using a variety of poetic devices,
or elements of a text. Some of these elements include line breaks, rhyme, figurative
language, and sound devices.

Poems can be about any subject. People are often interested in poetry because of the
poetic devices an author uses in a poem. Some examples of these devices are when a
poet uses rhyme to create humor or repetition of a sound to create rhythm. Each
element of a poem helps to communicate a larger meaning or idea about the subject of
the poem.
