REPORT OF GGSIP UNIVERSITY SPONSORED SEMINAR ON

THE TOPIC ‘DEVELOPING TECHNOLOGICALLY COMPETENT


TEACHERS’ on 28th and 29th November, 2014

The Institute of Vocational Studies, Sheikh Sarai, organized a Two-Day


GGSIP University Sponsored Seminar on one of the most dynamic
contemporary issues, ‘DEVELOPING TECHNOLOGICALLY
COMPETENT TEACHERS’ to enable the teacher educators to perfectly
blend, the traditional as well as contemporary ways and means of teaching,
for the comprehensive development of the students’ personality.

The seminar provided an enriched exposure to the participants in the


company of learned delegates from different fields of academia. A total
strength of about 250 participants attended the seminar with great zeal and
motivation.

The Inaugural session on Day I commenced with the lighting of lamp by


Hon’ble chief guest Prof. S. V. S. Choudhary (Registrar, IGNOU) Professor
Choudhary gave a valuable insight on the topic and focused on developing
learner centred approach and towards creation of e-teachers. It was followed
by enchanting of Quranic Verses. The invocation song; Saraswati Vandana
marked the perfect beginning for the seminar. Dr. Niranjana Soperna
(Principal, I.V.S.) presented the welcome address. The keynote address was
given by Prof. Saroj Sharma (University School of Education, GGSIPU)
who elaborated on the use of the Information Communication Technology
(ICT) in daily class room teaching. Prof. Sharma emphasized on the three
M’s the man, the machine and the money and focus on the research and
innovations in the field of computers and for making competent teachers and
to be computer illiterate to be able to use it in the classrooms. It was
followed by a brief address to the participants and presenters by Dr. V.P.
Pandey (Deputy Controller of Examination, SCERT, Delhi) who threw light
on the practical aspects of technology for education and emphasized that to
maintain competency one should practice learner based approach.
Concluding remarks were given by Mrs. Rubeena Khan.

The venue for the first technical session was Awadh Auditorium. The
session was chaired by Dr. P. Tripathi from IGNOU and Ms. Kiran of
Central University of Jammu. A number of presenters from various
universities of Delhi and neighbouring states participated enthusiastically
and presented their research papers on very important themes such as ICT
supported innovative models of teaching, issues in technology and teacher
education and empowering teachers’ competencies through ICT use. The
participants either read out the paper or gave a power point presentation. The
house was then opened for the Question Answer session. Dr. Tripathi
introduced the audience to the use of ICT in Open Distance Learning (ODL)
as well as to MOODLE software. The rapporteurs for the sessions were
students of B.Ed department. The technical session I was followed by a
lunch break.

Technical Session II was chaired by Professor M.C. Sharma (IGNOU) and


Dr. Nahar Singh (SCERT). The session was once again witnessed by a keen
audience who were striving to gain as much knowledge as they could. The
session was moderated and concluded by the enriching words of the resource
persons who highlighted the incorporation of ICT in the day to day teaching
learning pedagogy and imbibing these skills by the teacher educators.

Day 2 of the seminar began with a briefing of the proceedings of Day I. The
highlight of the day was an interactive talk given by Dr. Amit Ahuja
(University School of Education, GGSIPU). He stressed upon the integration
of the variety of available software in the educational domain along with the
judicious use of social networking sites. He also emphasized upon the
creative use of various mobile applications such as Whatsapp. The talk was
appreciated by all. It was then followed by Technical Session III which was
chaired by Professor Ilyas Hussain (Department of Education, Jamia Millia
Islamia) and Dr. Amit Ahuja. A series of papers were presented on the
related seminar theme. Many queries from the audience were catered to
during the question answer session. Professor Hussain concluded and
moderated the session by pointing out the intricate technicalities associated
with the usage of powerpoint. He condemned the way in which powerpoint
is making the teachers handicapped, however, he also suggested innovative
ways to use powerpoint effectively.

Post lunch Valedictory session was conducted by Professor M. Shafiq


(Dean, Faculty of Social Science & Director, Dalit and Minority Centre &
Chief Vigilance Officer, Jamia Millia Islamia). The session commenced with
the welcome speech by Ms. Shivangi Nigam which was followed by the
seminar report presented by Mrs. Rubeena Khan. Professor Shafiq
demonstrated a profound and enlightening approach towards the
psychological aspects of the contemporary issues in technology and teacher
education. His multi-disciplinary approach towards ICT brought a new
dimension to the theme.

Certificates were then distributed to the participants followed by the vote of


thanks by Mrs. Eram Aziz. The participants and the guests then gathered for
the High Tea.

This Two-Day Seminar was thus, successful in touching upon some of the
key issues associated with the technology integration in the contemporary
educational environment, and helping the participants imbibe few skills out
of the myriad of available technological opportunities.
