1600 OPERATORS MANUAL AMENDMENTS
Following enhancements to both the hardware and the software controling the product, there is an additional
feature of external clock for the acquisition system now available.
In addition some functions now operate in a different way.
This supplement details the operation of the external clock feature and lists the major changes to the instru-
ment operation for the main software, Version V3.55 onwards (1602 & 1604) and V4.5 (1602, 1604 & 1624),
and Versions V4.5X for the plug in options for the IEEE-488, and RS423, On 1MHz sets the main software is
Version 25X. See the current compatibility chart for further details of the software versions, 1MHz instru-
ments do not support some of the features mentioned in this supplement.
External Clock (2MHz only)
To select the external clock mode operate the timebase control on the front panel to select the range below
200sidiv when the screen will display the message ‘EXTCLK’, indicating that extemal clock is selected. Note
that if there is no clock applied to the clock input the acquisition will stop until a clock is supplied. To deselect
extemal clock operate the timebase control.
When in external clock mode trigger delay cannot be specified in ut
the external clock.
The tigger and status menu will display the trigger delay in units of clocks. The maximum delay is 499,990
clocks, and is settable to a resolution of 10 clocks via the front panel and 1 clock via IEEE/RS423,
Trigger delay by events is not supported in external clock mode, so the trigger menu will not offer this selec
tion in this mode.
of time, and will now work in units of
External clock can also be selected by IEEE, or RS423 and the details of commands can be found in the IEEE
section of this supplement under the ‘HSA’ and ‘TDELA’ commands.
‘The signal connection for the external clock input is on pin 6 of the analog /O 15 way D typé connector on the
rear panel, The OV connection for this signal should be connected to pin 7 of this connector.
‘The specification for the external clock is as follows;
Input : CMOS Level.
Maximum Input Levels +10V, -5V
Maximum Input Frequency: 2 MHz
Minimum Clock width 200ns
Note that since the clock input has a Schmitt input, the external clock can have very slow rise and fall times.
Acquisition/Trigger Menu
‘The menu has been altered to display the maximum delay available on the timebase range selected. Any
delay can be set in this menu up to 999 seconds, but if, when the menu is exited, the selected timebase range
does not allow this selected value of trigger delay to be used, it will use the largest value possible on this
timebase range. The instrument will stil remember the value originally set, so that if the timebase is then
Changed to a range that allows use of the set value of Trigger delay, the original value will now be used. If
however the delay is altered via the front panel, the value displayed on the screen is the value of Trigger delay
from then on.
It using the delay by events Trigger mode, the instrument will trigger after the Nth event following the start of
the acquisition. The only way to control the start of the acquisition is to ARM the instrument, and then the
instrument will rigger on the (N+1)th trigger after the ARM. Using Delay by events in ‘Continuous’ or real time
‘mode is meaningless since there is no way to synchronize the start of the delay by event sequence to a
signal

Special Functions Menu —_(See Section 2.7)
An extra feature has been added to this menu to allow the user to force a calibration of the offsets of the
preamplifiers.
‘The menu now looks like this:
(GG CH2 CH3 CH4 REF1 REF2....1
WD) subtract Multiply . .2
CH Qj CH3 CH4 REF1 REF2....3
RESULT TO CURSOR TRACE......4
‘TV STANDARD: NTSC PAL SECAM . 5
AUTOCAL: Disable EYED. -

‘Special Functions Menu
Pressing button 7 initiates a calibration and returns the display to trace mode, The calibration will happen
regardless of the instrument status unlike the regular 1 hour autocalibration.
As a result in the Divide by N mode the phase of the triggering.will be lost. A message is put up on the menu if
Divide by N is selected to wam the user that this will happen. -
Autocal
(On 2MHz instruments the first automatic calibration after switch on now occurs after 20 minutes instead of the
original 10, and as before the next autocal follows an hour later. Untilthe first calibration, the calibration data from
the last time the DSO was operated is used. While the instrument is warming up, there will be small offsets in
the ampiiiers. Auto calibrations will occur every hour so long as Autocal is enabled. Note that Autocal is re-
enabled on every switch on. ‘There has been no change to the autocal sequences on 1MHz instruments.
Operating button 8 displays the Set Date and Time menu, whichis used to read or set the date and time held by
the instrument.
‘The menu is shown overteat:

The menu indicates the date and time when the menu was initially selected.
To set the date or time, operate button 2 of 3 and the 1st field of the selected item will lash to indicate
numeric entry mode. Alter altering the date andior time the instrument will not implement any changes until
button 4 is operated, when the displayed date and time will be set in the instrument. If button 4 is not oper-
ated there will be no change to the instrument date and time.
Plots (2MHz only)
Any horizontal shift applied to the displayed traces is now taken into consideration on plots and the plotted
traces are also shifted relative to the graticule.
Note however, that because there is no direct electronic connection between the screen graticule and the
displayed traces, the displayed and plotted traces may not be identically aligned with their graticules.
Plot Buffer/Background Plotting (2MHz only)
‘An enhancement to the plot function has been added to the instrument. Instead of locking the front panel out
during a plot, the necessary information is loaded into a plot buffer and the front panel is then released to
enable the user to carry on using the instrument
When th¢ plot button is pressed, both the plot and hold lamps light. After about 2 seconds the hold lomp
‘goes out indicating that the data has been transferred and that the instrument can be used again. The plot
lamp will remain ft until the plots complete when it will go out and a message ‘PLOTTING COMPLETE’ will
appear on the screen.
It the plot button is pressed again while the plot lamp is on, the plot will be aborted. Any changes to the
instrument status during a plot will have no effect on the plot as the data has already been transferred and
stored in the plot buffer. Ia calibration occurs during a plot, the plot slows down but there is no change to
the stored data.

1600 System Reset
Should the system memory become corrupted, the instrument could lock out the front panel operation or
begin to behave erratically. Since the internal system variables are held in non-volatile memory, turing the
set off an on again may not clear them. In this unlikely event a system reset may be necessary.
A system reset should only be used as a last resort as all the internal memories will be cleared erasing all
reference traces, calibration details, and set-up details.
To perform a system reset, switch the instrument off. Press and hold the Hold All and the Plot buttons.
Keep these buttons pressed and turn the instrument on using the Power button. The instrument will th
start up in its reset condition. ‘This can be confirmed by noting that after the reset, all the channel sensitivities
are set to 1V/div and the timebase to 100ys/div.
IEEE-488 Commands (Refer to Section 3)
‘Some commands have been changed in their operation and there are some new commands which have
been added,
The changes are detailed in the following text
a) GRATYP, Alter Graticule Type
this is a new command to allow the graticule plotted to be either SOLID or BROKEN.
‘The syntax
GRATYP =[SOLID] or[BROKEN] Assertive
or GRATYP Interrogative
b) HELLO. Hello Message
‘The string has been modified and now returns the following information:
‘GOULD, 1604 or 1602, V3.57; RS423 or IEEE, V4.51" or similar message
Which gives the version number of the software in the 1600, and the version number of the VO
software fitted to the 102, or 103A Intertace Option.
¢) HSA. Horizontal Scaling
To allow the selection of external clock on 2MHz sets an additional parameter is used with this com-
mand
HSA = EXTCLK will select external clock mode.
‘The instrument will send ‘HSA=EXTCLK’ if HSA is used interrogatively, when external clock is already
selected.
d) RCLMS, Recall Machine Setup
Now returns a SRQ = 74 to indicate the recall is complete.
@) STORE. Force storage mode
‘This is a new command which forces the instrument into the storage mode, irrespective of whether
the instrument is in real-time or storage mode.
The syntax is:

1) STR*A. Acquisition Store Transfer
‘The ‘star’ form of the command is not allowed. Use instead STR1A, STR2A, STR3A, STA4A; in
Sequence if itis required to transmit all stores.
To transfer data in pretrigger mode, use ARM to capture the data, and then use STA"A when
‘STORED. It is not possible to use HOLD to stop acquisitions and then use the STR*A command to
transfer the data in pretrigger mode.
‘SAQ 100: Selection Failure, is returned If this command is used while the 10K Acquisition stores
contain non-valid data e.g. when the traces have been processed in any way.
This SAQ is only sent if the IEEE pod has been updated to V3.54 or tater.
9) TDELA. Trigger Delay
Itin external clock mode the trigger delay is specified in units of the acquisition clock. Hence it in
external clock mode, TDELA will return the number of clocks delay selected, or can be used to set the
umber of clocks delay.
The syntax is:
TDELA = 1000
or TDELA ‘To which the 1600 would reply
TDELA = 1000 Which indicates the delay is one thousand clocks:
The maximum number of clocks is 499,980
hy TRVS1A. Vertical Trace Scaling (See Section 3)
The only parameters that can be asserted are Trace Invert and the range.
The parameters that are returned to the interrogative form of the command are:

k) TXT. On Screen Text
‘TXT*, TXTO, TXT15 to TXT31 cannot be used in the assertive form of the command.
Note that if TXT is used to write text to the display while displaying menus, the text sent will be over-
written by the menu text immediately after receipt of the text. Ifit is desired to display text on the
screen use TRACE mode, where the text will be superimposed on the trace display. This text will be
plotted out on the internal plotter or extemal digital plotter.
