A moving dilemma
A large chemical company based in
North America recently employed
WirelessHART control in its product
development lab area. The lab was
comprised of a large number of small
batch reactors processing a variety of
different new products. Since the raw
materials varied significantly from reac-

lab utilized a collection of mobile raw
material carts to charge materials into
the reactors.
Each cart consisted of three Coriolis

digital valve positioners, and three local

Identifying the collection points can
take some time depending on the appli-

of vanes and type of volute, should all be

relating data offers a new way for people
to interface with machines to increase
efficiency and productivity.
Companies like SKF are not only using
big data to help plants monitor and ana-
lyze the health of their machinery, but
they can also help original equipment
manufacturers (OEMs) improve machine
design. For example, data insights can
be shared with OEMs to enhance pump
design — recommending a different
bearing or seal — that could alleviate a
specific design challenge experienced on
a global scale.
This type of sophisticated data min-
ing not only provides insight that drives
strategic, operational decision-making
but can also optimize product design
and development.

ROI of vibration analysis

Setting up a proactive vibration analysis
program can save companies thousands
of dollars. Identifying a flow-related issue
before damaging the internals of a pump
can prevent a $3,000 repair from turn-
ing into a $25,000 repair. Factoring in the
loss of productivity that can also occur
when a pump fails further contributes to
the return on investment (ROI).
Companies that want to use digitali-
zation to maximize performance, reduce
costs and be more competitive — but
do not necessarily have the resources or
expertise in-house — can turn to third-
party experts to transform their business.
New fee-based business models designed

should be placed at the low elevation sec-

Although this portion of piping is generally
more congested, the loop should still be
placed at the bottom portion in combina-

with original bends reduces the number of

Preferably, the loop should be laid out

meet the allowable limit, an expansion
joint may be considered. Although the
expansion joint is an expensive item, re-
quiring special engineering, it is still better
than a system that will not work. In some
cases, due to considerably high tempera-
ture diferences and large sizes of piping,
it is absolutely impossible to design a pip-
ing system that will meet the allowable
load. Loops or other flexibility-providing
options cannot be used due to many
diferent reasons, and then the only re-
maining option is an expansion joint.
