THE AGE OF THE LIBERAL REVOLUTIONS (1789-1871)

1. Estates-General: french assembly with representation of the three estates of the

Ancien Régime.
2. Census suffrage: system that gives the vote to people with a certain level of
wealth.
3. Popular sovereingty: principle that the authority of the state is created by its
people. Implies the universal suffrage.
4. Robespierre: jacobin leader that ruled France durin 1793 introducing social laws
and imposing the Reign of Terror.
5. Despoilment: to deprive by force of somthing valuable.
6. Political party: organized group with the same political position who field
candidates to the elections.
7. Liberalism: political theory that defends the legal equality, freedom and individual
rights.
8. Nationalism: political theory thath defends that every nation has the right of
forming a state.
9. Garibaldi: popular leader that led a uprising to overthrew the absolutes
monarchies during the italian unification.
10. Otto Von Bismarck: chancellor of Prusia and Germany, political leader of the
german unification.
