Show Me Love

Some songs serve the purpose of telling a story, providing the opportunity to dance, or to

simply have some background music on while completing other tasks. The song “Show Me

Love” originally written by Hundred Waters gives the listener a sense of awareness and hope for

change for the future. There are a few different versions of this song but the ones I have chosen

to evaluate are remixes done by Big Wild and Skrillex ft. Chance The Rapper, Moses Sumney,

and Robin Hannibal. Big Wild’s and Skrillex's remixes of the song "Show Me Love," allows for

a deeper understanding as well as feeling to the song. Both versions call for an outpour of love

towards others and strive to help the audience understand the significance of responding in love

when you have the opportunity to respond with hate.

The remix of "Show Me Love," done by Big Wild provides for a light hearted tone that

draws the listener in. The remix is longer than the original which allows for breaks in the lyrics

to add musical montages. The video does not provide an actual video but rather a visual of

colorful artwork. Although this is upbeat and includes many techno sounding elements, it is still

a mellow version of the original song written by Hundred Waters. The simplistic melodies give a

soothing and intrigued attitude. Within the song, the lyrics state,

“Don’t let me show cruelty though I may make mistakes

Warren 2
Don’t let me show ugliness though I know I can hate

And don’t let me show evil though, it might be all I take

Show me love, show me love, show me love.”

These lyrics display a very powerful message that may be difficult for some to accept. The easy

response when you receive judgment or hate is to give hate or judgment back. These lyrics

encourage listeners to decide to make the hard right over the easy wrong and respond with love

even in the most trying situation. The next part of the song says,

“Don't let me think weakly though I know that I can break

Keep me away from apathy while I am still awake

And don't let me think too long of the one I'm bound to face

Show me love, show me love, show me love”

Although these lyrics do not differ from the original song, the calming music behind the words

allows the listener to be drawn in and really focus on what is being said by the gentle voices. It is

important to be directed down the right path. These lyrics are urging the audience to recognize

the significance of acknowledging that in this life you will face hardships. But that through

patience, self development, and confidence, you will be able to improve your reactive habits to

progressively respond in love.

The next remix of "Show Me Love," done by Skrillex ft. Chance The Rapper, Moses

Sumney, and Robin Hannibal shows multiple people fellowshipping with each other and simply

having a good time. This video encourages and reminds those watching to love whoever you

come in contact with. Being around those who inspire you to do good provides for a healthy

body, mindset, and overall life. The unique dynamic between Moses Sumney and Chance The

Rapper's verses and the gentle vocals in the chorus allows for audiences of multiple different

music styles to be drawn in and enjoy this song. The first verse of the remix sang by Moses

Sumney provide lyrics that includes,

“I got a crick in my neck, limp in my step

Crampin' in my muscles every time I try to flex

We're broken

Not really in the right mindset to seem open, open

Never really been fought out, like a politician martyr

But you made me listen to your petition rise

Love, let's get over

It's very sad, no more love

All that I could do was remember you

You know I usually say no

But if you throw me love, I'll throw you some more”

These lyrics suggest that the world lacks the exchange of love. Although it can be difficult to

stay kind and loving in a society that is hurting and while you may be experiencing hardships,

through the sharing of love, we are inspired to spread love as we receive it. These lyrics begin to

consider the possibility that through giving love, you may begin to heal yourself from the inside

out. Chance The Rapper’s verse then says,

“Show me love when I pop out, when I pop out

Warren 4

City I always talk 'bout, what I rap 'bout

Show me love cause I love it, I love it

Only thing I could covet, in public”

“City on a come up, I might share my bonus”

The lyrics within this verse express the importance of giving back to your community and truly

wanting to see others succeed. It encourages that where you see a need, you fill a need. Chance

The Rapper provides for a multitude of audiences ranging from various ages, demographics, and

backgrounds to listen to the message being told. The use of ethos is used in the way of being

influenced by producers and what they say. Some may feel that due to the fact that they have

faced trials, that they need to respond only in hatred, while this song and the people within it, is

rather encouraging listeners to choose to explore new, maybe different, but effective ways of

responding to the hate they have been given.

Hearing this message could provide for a happier and healthier society. Although these

two songs differ in execution, they ultimately share the same message. Both versions use pathos

in the relation to the real life problems we all go through. The lyrics provide for a very emotional

connection with the problems being faced everyday while the music itself draws you in and

demands undivided attention. The music video provided in the remix done by Skrillex shows

awareness and influence that needs to be seen of how love and acceptance can call for a fun and

care-free environment. The next generation can be the change and through messages being told

in songs that kids listen to everyday like this one, they have the opportunity and ability to change

this world for the better. Hearing these messages from a young age and instilling these morals

into the youth of America could provide for a happier, more creative and more loving world.
