Executive Summary
of
Public Policies and Politics in Emergency Management (EAM 3013)
Description:
Politics is a word that most people around me will sigh or roll their eyes at. No one seems
to like it. Public Policies and Politics is an Emergency management course that is taught to teach
students to analyze “the role of public policy and politics within emergency management” as
stated in the syllabus. With the view this class presents politics with it allows for understanding
free from bias as much as it can be.
Lessons Learned:
These are the learning objectives that I think are the most relevant and that I completed.
● Evaluate the importance of policy and politics as they relate to emergency management
by understanding the impact policy and politics can have.
● Analyze the impact of government regulation on emergency management by knowing the
way the different levels of government handle emergency management and if they value
it or not.
● Evaluate the importance of relationships and collaboration in all sectors and levels of
emergency management by understanding how emergency management works among all
levels of government.
● Verify that information is evidence-based by learning to research and think logically
about statements.

Summary:
This course helped me understand the importance of knowing how the political system
works and the need to have genuine relationships with other organizations, agencies, levels of
government, etc. With these two bases established, the course requires extra research to be done
for assignments that will be discussed with the whole class which forces the students to know the
validity of their sources. There are team assignments that help build a fairly realistic example of
coordination among different parties.
After taking this course, I can see why most people dislike politics. Politics can be seen
as relationships and like relationships they can be very messy. There is conflict, compromise,
and a need for understanding and team work. This course paints this picture well and offers a
way to know what happens in politics and to handle them better.
