Part 1
1. careful ['keəful] taking care (in order to avoid loss, damage, danger, mistakes etc.) cẩn
thận, thận trọng ( để tránh mất mát, thiệt hại, nguy hiểm, lầm lẫn…)
a- (with sth) (với cái gì)
Be careful with that vase, will you? It's worth a lot of money.
He's very careful with his money; in fact some people say he's mean
b- (of s.o./sth, especially something that may harm you) đề phòng (ai,điều gì;rằng….)
Be careful of the traffic when you cross the road.
My mother always told me to be careful of stranger.
c- (to do sth / that ...) cẩn thận (làm điều gì; rằng ….)
I was careful to choose the right words, so that they wouldn't misunderstand me.
Be careful that you don't fall.1

2. cautious ['kɔ:∫əs] very careful; not wanting to act quickly, in order to avoid possible
danger or bad results: hết sức cẩn thận, đề phòng ( để tránh nguy hiểm, hậu quả xấu có
thể xảy ra)
He's cautious about accepting the offer before he knows all the details.
3. wary ['weəri] (of s.o./ sth; of doing sth) very cautious because you are not sure about
something: rất đề phòng (bởi vì bạn không đảm bảo chắc chắn về chuyện gì); cảnh
giác.
After her divorce, she was wary of getting involved with anyone again.
He is very wary of people in authority.
4. conscientious [,kɔn∫i'en∫əs] careful to do your work well : tận tâm, chu đáo.
She's so conscientious that she often works late without getting paid
5. thorough ['θʌrə]careful in your work; paying attention to every detail: tỉ mỉ, kỹ lưỡng
(trong công việc làm)
She's very thorough whenever she writes a report.
The doctor gave him a thorough examination
6. efficient [i'fi∫ənt]working well and quickly : làm việc giỏi và nhanh; có năng lực;
có năng suất.
They're an efficient company with a very good reputation.
7. competent ['kɔmpitənt] able to do a job well : có thể làm việc giỏi; có khả năng.
He's a competent teacher and his students are making good progress.
8. particular [pə'tikjulə(r)] (about sth) not easily satisfied; choosing very carefully:
khó chịu; cầu kỳ.
She's particular about her food and there are some things she'll never eat.
9. fussy ['fʌsi] (about sth) very particular: rất cầu kỳ
He's fussy about the clothes he buys and always takes ages to choose them.
Note: I'm not fussy = I don't mind: tôi không có bận tâm.
'Where would you like to sit?' - 'I'm not fussy.'
10. conservative [kən'sə:vətiv] not wanting to do or try anything new or unusual:
chăm sóc / trông nom ( ai/ cái gì)
She's very conservative in her choice of clothes.
11. to take care (of s.o./sth) to keep someone or something safe and well or in good
condition :chăm sóc/ trông nom ai/ cái gì
If you take care of your records, they will last you for years
Who's going to take care of the children while you're on holiday?
12. to look after (s.o./sth) to take care of: chăm sóc; trông nom.
You should look after your health.
Look after yourself!
13. to mind [maind] (sth / that ...) (often used in the imperative) to be careful of
something: cẩn thận về (ai/ cái gì)
Mind the stop!
Mind what you're doing with that knife!
Mind (that) you don't fall!
14. to watch out (for sth) to be very careful (to avoid something which might be
dangerous)
để ý đề phòng / cảnh giác ( để tránh điều có thể xảy ra nguy hiểm)
Watch out or you'll get hurt.
While you're in London, watch out for pickpockets.
15. to look out (for sth) to be careful to notice : để ý / canh chừng(để thấy ai / cái gì)
Look out for the hospital - that's where we have to turn right.
16. to keep your eyes open (for s.o/ sth) to keep looking or watching (in order to notice
someone or something): chú ý ; theo dõi (để thấy ai/ cái gì)
I'm keeping my eyes open for another job, as I don't like the one I've got.
17. to check (sthlthat ...) to look again in order to see something is correct: kiểm tra ;
xem xét (cái gì)
I'll check the train timetable before I go, in case it's changed.
Check (that) you haven't forgotten anything.
18. to make sure (of sth/ that ...) to check in order to be certain: xem cho chắc, làm
cho
chắc chắn
Make sure (that) you haven't forgotten anything.
Make sure of your facts before you accuse him.
19. to ensure (that ...)(formal) to make sure: làm cho chắc chắn ,bảo đảm.
I repeated it to ensure that they'd heard me.
20. to take a lot of trouble (over sth) to spend a lot of time and effort doing something:
mất công khó nhọc.
This is a very exotic meal - you must have taken a lot of trouble over it.
21. to protect [prə'tekt] (s.o/ sth from / against s.o./sth) to keep someone or something
safe from harm or danger: bảo vệ, bảo hộ( ai/ điều gì)
She wore a coat to protect herself from the cold.
The children were vaccinated to protect them against disease.

careless ['keəlis](with / about sth) not careful: not paying attention what you do
He's a very careless driver.
She's careless with money and to frequently get into debt.
He's very careless about his appearance.
2. sloppy ['slɔpi] doing work in a careless and inadequate way: cẩu thả ; nhếch nhác
lôi thôi(trong công việc)
The painters were very sloppy and the room looks terrible.

3. inefficient [,ini'fi∫ənsi] not efficient : thiếu khả năng, bất tài.


She's so inefficient that everybody else has to do her job for her
4. incompetent [in'kɔmpitənt] not competent : không có khả năng, bất tài.
He's really incompetent and does even the simplest jobs badly.
5. impulsive [im'pʌlsiv] acting suddenly without thinking: hấp tấp; bốc đồng.
I know it was impulsive of me, hut I saw it and liked it so much that I went straight into
the shop and bought it.!
She's impulsive and buys things she can't afford.
6. rash [ræ∫] impulsive; doing foolish or dangerous things : hấp tấp, làm điều dại dột
hay nguy hiểm; thiếu suy nghĩ.
Its rash to agree to do something you can't possibly do.
1t was rather rash of them to buy the house without seeing it first..
7. hasty ['heisti] acting or deciding too quickly: vội vàng ; hấp tấp.
Don't be too hasty! Think careful about what might happen.
8. spontaneous [spɔn'teiniəs] (of an event) not planned : tự phát; tự ý.
The party was completely spontaneous - we only decided that evening to have one.
9. On the spur of the moment: suddenly; without being planned: do sự thôi thúc bất
ngờ, không suy tính trước.
On the spur of the moment I phoned a friend and arranged to go out.
10. to jump to conclusions : to make a judgement quickly and without knowing all the
facts: vội đi tới kết luận.
Don't jump to conclusions! Just because he looks stupid, it doesn't mean that he is.
11. a snap decision: a sudden decision, made without thinking carefully: một quyết
định vội vàng.
I didn't have time to think about it. I had to make n snap decision.
