3. HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION

The preparation is classified as dangerous according to Directive 1999/45/EC and its amendments.

Causes severe burns.

White colored dry powder.

4. FIRST AID MEASURES

INHALATION
Remove individual to fresh air and get immediate medical attention. If breathing is difficult, give
oxygen. If breathing stops give artificial respiration
SKIN
Immediately wash exposed skin with plenty of soap and water while removing contaminated
clothing and shoes. Get immediate medical attention.
EYES
Hold eyelids apart and flush the eye gently with large amount of water for at least 15 minutes. Get
immediate medical attention.

INGESTION
Get immediate medical attention. Do not induce vomiting unless directed to do so by medical
personnel since this can damage the mouth and throat.

5. FIRE-FIGHTING MEASURES

EXTINGUISH MEDIA
Use only flooding quantities of water as spray. Do not use halogenated extinguishing agents. Use
carbon dioxide or suitable dry chemical extinguisher. Extinguish fire using agent suitable for type of
surrounding fire.

FIRE FIGHTING PROCEDURES

Approach fire from upwind to avoid hazardous vapors. Use flooding quantities of water as fog or
spray to keep fire exposed containers cool. Extinguish fire using agent suitable for surrounding fire.
Firefighters should wear self contained appositive breathing apparatus to avoid skin contact.

HAZARDOUS COMBUSTION PRODUCTS

Toxic fumes of oxides of phosphorous, Sodium Sulfite emits very toxic fumes of sodium and sulfur
oxides.

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS
Cleanup personnel must wear proper protective equipment (refer section 8).

2
ENVIRONMENTAL PRECAUTIONS
Prevent from entering drains, sewers, streams or other bodies of water. If contamination of sewers or
waterways has occurred, advise the local emergency services.

METHODS FOR CLEANING UP

Wear proper protective equipment to prevent skin and eye contact. With a clean shovel, transfer
spilled material into clean-labeled containers for disposal.

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE

HANDLING
Do not taste or swallow material. Avoid contact with skin and avoid breathing mist. Do not eat,
drink or smoke in work area. Any protective clothing or shoes which become contaminated should
be removed immediately and thoroughly laundered before reuse.

STORAGE
Store material separated from strong acids, metals food and feedstuffs, in an area having corrosion
resistant concrete floor.

8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION

EXPOSURE LIMITS

Name of Substance: Sodium Hydroxide

OSHA: PEL 2 mg/m3 Ceiling (based on irritation effects)

ACGIH: TLV 2 mg/m3 Ceiling

Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health

IDLH : 10 mg/m3

PERSONAL PROTECTION

Eye and face protection: Wear chemical goggles. A face shield should be worn in addition to
goggles where splashing or spraying is a possibility.

Skin protection: Wear chemical resistant clothing boots and gloves, which are made
of neoprene, PVC or rubber. Always place pants legs over boots.

Respiratory protection: Where concentrations of sodium hydroxide exceed 2mg/m3 use a

self contained breathing apparatus.

10. STABILITY AND REACTIVITY

STABILITY
Product is stable under normal use conditions.

CONDITIONS TO BE AVOIDED
Mixtures with water, acid or incompatible materials can cause splattering and release of large
amounts of heat. Material’s solution will react with some metals forming flammable hydrogen gas.

MATERIALS TO BE AVOIDED
Chlorinated and fluorinated hydrocarbons (Chloroform, Difluoroethane), acetaldehyde, acrolein. The
substance is a strong base; it reacts violently with acid and is corrosive to metals like zinc,
aluminum, tin and lead forming a combustible/explosive gas. Attacks some forms of plastics, rubber
or coatings. Rapidly absorbs carbon dioxide and water from air.

HAZARDOUS DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS

Sodium hydroxide decomposes to sodium oxide and water. Sodium Tripolyphosphate can emit
highly toxic fumes of oxides of phosphorous. Sodium Sulfite emits very toxic fumes of sodium and
sulfur oxides.
