In this study, two types of nutshell ashes, namely walnut and hazelnut shell ashes,
were employed as solid catalysts for biodiesel production to compare their catalytic
performances. For this purpose, both catalysts were prepared in the same way i.e., by
combustion of nutshells in the air followed by calcination at 800C for 2 h. The
elemental composition and crystalline structure of both ashes were determined by ICP
and EDX method and XRD analysis, respectively. The catalytic tests were performed
under the atmospheric pressure in a batch glass reactor at 12:1 molar ratio of
methanol-to-sunflower oil and reaction time of 1 h. The catalyst loadings of 1 and 5%
and reaction temperature of 60C were used. Further, their catalytic performance was
compared to conventional catalysts, potassium hydroxide and calcined quicklime
(mainly composed of calcium oxide). Potassium and calcium were detected as the
most abundant elements in both ashes that contribute to their very good catalytic
activity for biodiesel production. The difference in the catalytic performance of hazelnut
and walnut shell ashes was not observed at the higher catalyst loading. The walnut
and hazelnut shell ashes showed superior catalytic performance over quicklime as a
catalyst, but a slightly lower activity than potassium hydroxide. Both nutshell ashes
could be used to replace the pure chemical compound (KOH) as a catalyst in
biodiesel production.
