According to the study “Phenomenographical colloquies of the hallyu wave among

selected students of Taytay Senior High School, Philippines” Blas, F. A. & Erestain C. O.,
(2020) shows that Hallyu phenomenon has reached far and wide in the Philippines in nearly
two decades since “Winter Sonata” (2002) release. Foreseeing its evolution to Hallyu 4.0 on
2018 already made a big impact on the random lives of the Filipinos. Through the years,
minus political relations, it’s like the Philippines has become South Korea’s biggest
fan.Patronizing of the Korean culture and arts has escalated high that Filipinos have been
taken by the
Hallyu waves be it in entertainment, fashion, food, technology and culture. The Hallyu
phenomenon has penetrated and targeted specifically the consciousness of the Filipino
adolescents who have better access of the media, social media and technology. In this study
in fact, the researchers were able to highlight the growing impact of the Korean influence in
the ordinary lives of selected Senior High School students at Taytay Senior High School.
Through phenomenography, the researchers were able to relate about the direct
experiences of the participants on how much of their lives have been influenced by the
Hallyu phenomenon. The following ideal types were underscored by the researchers based
from the results of the FGD and
literature review:
a. The struggle is apparent on being a K-pop fan due to the limitedness of resources and
being an ordinary student, but it is how they make both ends meet that makes the
existence real as a fan. Participants noted the sacrifices they usually make in
conjunction with the intrinsic desire to accommodate the narrowed down choices to
follow their celebrity idols. This is in reference to the theory of desire-fulfillment
theory (Heathwood, 2015).
b. The fulfillment of the strong desire to connect with their celebrity idols, the
participants admitted that they find hundreds of ways to be updated with the life and career
of their K-idols. How they save up from the meager allowance, download
episodes despite very incompetent internet connection, visit illegal online sites or
outsource from friends or fellow-poppers were some of the ingenuous ways adapted
by the participants.
c. The Korean influence according to the participants has hit them even through their
subconscious state such that even in the course of daily tasks as student, private citizen or
family member, and so as their natural state of expressions both in oral or in deeds.
d. The attractiveness of the Hallyu culture has predated the Philippine culture by using the
soft power strategy that has powerfully invaded pop culture, mass media and social media in
the Philippines for almost three decades now. Soft Power has been explained as the fluid
entry of cultural elements such as drama series, music and dance crazes, food, fashion and
accessories, technology and beauty products including skin care and aesthetic surgery
procedures through Korean culture.
e. Be it film, drama series, K-pop music, dance, fashion, style, accessories, Korean food,
language, aesthetic surgery and beauty care, the Korean influence has fused with the
Philippine culture and these were highly observed by the participants. They in fact agreed
that the fusion has become inevitable due to the strong commitment of the Philippine
fandom to the elements of Korean culture and its celebrities. This was further expounded by
cultural hybridization. The Korean influence according to the participants has hit them even
through their subconscious state such that even in the course of daily tasks as student,
private citizen or family member, their state of thinking which make them cultural hybrids
(Ryoo, 2009) and they even participate in hallyu’s growth by being Cultural intermediaries
(Maguire and Matthews, 2012).

The study entitled “THE IMPACT OF KOREAN WAVE TO THE ACCEPTANCE OF KOREAN
CULTURE AND PRODUCT AMONG INDONESIAN”by (Rahmiati,2012)shows that overall
attitude of Indonesian people has a significant relation with four independent variables,
which are product and culture awareness, perception on class position and level of strength
attitude toward acculturation. However separately, it was found that product and culture
awareness have more significant to the overall attitude than perception on class position
and level of strength attitude toward acculturation. Where peoples' perception of product
by Korean wave is positively related to the willingness to purchase products associated with
Korea. As well as culture awareness, where the more they perceive the Korean wave
positively, they more likely to learn and know about Korean culture. On the other hand,
there is no significant correlation between people who has image of Korean wave with
higher social class and change their attitude. Also, there is no correlation between people
who has a higher level of attitude toward acculturation and attitude change.Regarding to the
relation of perception on K-pop/soundtrack and the affection to actor and actress to the
overall attitude, it showed differences result. This study revealed that the majority of the
respondents were affected by K-pop/soundtrack and Korean celebrities in perceiving
product and culture by Korean wave on willingness to change their attitude. Meanwhile,

music-culture/

According to Mian Hua Zheng (2018) Filled with bright flashing lights, synchronized
moves, matching outfits, and picture perfect smiles, the South Korean pop music industry,
also known as K-Pop, has become a recognizable worldwide phenomenon. From male idol
groups paired with alluring smiles and smouldering gazes to female units filled with
flirtatious winks and cutesy dances, K-Pop is an iconic business that has been the inspiration
for many dancers and singers around the world. It has especially influenced American music
culture by becoming one of the most popular foreign genres of pop music in the United
States with new introductions of groups like BTS gaining fans by the day. With Korean pop’s
presence, emphasis on performance and a larger appeal to more demographics have been
introduced. The growth of K-Pop popularity in the United States is commonly known as the
“Hallyu wave,” which translates to the Korean wave, referencing the increasing popularity
and international spread of South Korean culture since the 1990s. This cultural influence
includes the introduction of Korean food, language, and entertainment, in the United States
ever since South Korea entered into diplomatic relations with China in 1992.  Additionally, K-
pop’s use of synchronized dances, single gender groups, and matching outfits, are elements
seen in America in the 1990s with boy bands such as the Backstreet Boys. The K-Pop industry
appeals to a variety of audiences, with groups characterized by a variety of qualities, ranging
from cutesy to cool to sultry. K-Pop is also memorable due to its inclusion of “point dance,”
or simple dances that become trademarked with their songs. The inclusion of repetitive
movements makes it easier for fans to follow along and enjoy performances even more.
Notable point dances include Seventeen’s “popping” in “Mansae,” Psy’s horse style dance in
“Gangnam Style,” Girls Generation’s crab leg dance in “Gee,” and Twice’s “TT,” in their song
of the same name.

The K-Pop industry has also influenced beauty and fashion standards in the United States.
Looks play an important role in the industry, with each idol looking picture perfect at all
times. Though the result may be a larger demographic of fans, Puspita Dasroy ’20 said, “The
downfalls of this beauty standard are the unhealthy habits that idols follow to look a certain
way.” The “perfect” Korean idol stereotypically has pale skin, a similar height with other
members, thin bodies, colorful hair, and small faces. The introduction of K-Pop to the
American music industry has helped reinforce the expectations of thinness. However,
America has differed by having broader expectations of beauty including a larger variety of
features such as curvy body types, different skin colors, and greater racial diversity. There
has also been a noticeable difference in fashion itself. Asian culture has influenced the
implementation of pastel colors and simple designs in popular brands like Forever 21.

Overall, the Korean pop industry has had a very important influence on American culture
today, not only affecting the variety of languages and food but also the music. With the
unique Asian fashion that it brings and its influence on Western music, K-Pop can look
forward to the integration and appreciation of more of its culture in the future.

Ang Media Dependency Theory ay natuklasan nina Sandra Ball-Rokeach at Melvin
DeFleur noong 1976.

“Xenophile: one attracted to foreign things (such as styles or people)” ( Merriam-
Webster, 2020).
Christina, 2018).
