ana MAINTENANCE MANUAL OVERVOLTAGE PROTECTION UNIT A3M1-A1 - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION 1. Description The overvoltage protection unit ASN-A1 is designed to protect DC power system against dangerous ‘overvoltage and changing polarity of the field of jointly operating starter-generator CTT-12TMO and generator 'C-24A. ‘The overvoltage protection unit is a set of components arranged on a base and closed with a cover. ‘The front wall of the base is provided with electric connectors, The cover is furnished with contact button, which is intended for returning the unit to initial state after its actuating Main Data Actuation voltage 31.5205 V ‘Actuation time at the voltage of: Upto37V 0.17 100.505 Up to 60. V 0.05 100.125 The overvoltage protection units for starters-generators CTT-12TMO are installed on the ceiling between frames Nos. 11 and 12; overvoltage protection unit for generator [C-24A is installed in right engine nacelle (Ret. Fig. 2) ‘The main components of the overvoltage protection unit are: Voltage measuring unit BMH-15, Solid-state relay PBH-120. ‘Switching elements. The voltage measuring unit being connected to generator output actuates at the increase of generator voltage over 31 V. ‘The solid-state timer being connected in parallel with generator field winding actuates upon winding voltage drop below preset level. At normal Operation of the generator, this voltage is not sufficient for actuating the timer. Usually, the generator overvoltage is associated with the current in field winding so that the voltage rise leads to increased current in the winding, which is similar to a voltage drop there. The timer is adjusted so that it actuates only in response to the increased field current. This feature of the timer is used to provide selective disconnection of a failed generator in the case of joint operating (the voltage drop at the field windings of serviceable generators would not be sufficient to actuate respective timers). ‘Taking into consideration the above features, the unit actuates upon simultaneous meeting the following requirements: Generator output voltage is over 31 V. \Voltage drop across field winding is sufficient for actuating the timer. The generator output voltage is applied to voltage measuring unit via contact 1 of connector X1. At the rated generator voltage, transistors 2V4, 2V5 are cut off and relay K1 of the unit is de-energized. Should generator voltage exceed the level of 31 V, transistors 2V4, 2V5 become conductive, relay 2K1 actuates land with contacts 2, 3 connects the timer to generator field winding (via diode V4 and contact 3 of connector X3). This results in charging capacitor 1C1 of the timer. As soon as the capacitor voltage exceeds operating voltage of stabilizer diode 1V6, transistor 1V7 becomes conductive and energizes relay K3. This done, relay K4 actuates and energizes contactor KS, which actuates to decrease excitation of the generator. 024.31.06 Page 2 May 10/04 une MAINTENANCE MANUAL a @ a | op} A, 7 ra : 3 xe Se eve 2 rz i I s Lt ne 75 a 2 Led Se) s 1 {} ? 7 " w L, x = “ 13) fey eter ra T mn ne pani ents Electrical Diagram of Overvolage Protection Unit A&M-At Figure 2 024.31.06, Page 3/4 May 10/04
