Why Plagiarism Is Not in the Students Best Interest

Plagiarism can occur in many ways without writers even realizing they are plagiarizing.

Plagiarism is using words or ideas of another’s work and passing it off as your own or presenting

new information as an original idea (What is Plagiarism and How to Avoid It. (n.d.)). Someone

can be plagiarizing by paraphrasing, using direct quotes, ideas, or graphs if the writer does not

give credit where credit is due. To avoid the consequences or plagiarism it is important to know

how to cite and how to write a bibliography. When paraphrasing the words that are written have

to be the writer’s own words and it has to be credited at the end of the paraphrase. Quoting is

another way to avoid plagiarism. To quote it must be direct words from the source as well as put

in quotation marks with a citation at the end of the quote (What is Plagiarism and How to Avoid

It. (n.d.)).

If anyone commits plagiarism, there are consequences to the act of crime. As a student

who gets caught plagiarizing the college will have stipulations in play for how it is handled.

Many colleges will expel or suspend that student and will have this on their academic record

when trying to go to other colleges alike (6 Consequences of Plagiarism. (n.d.). As a professional

who plagiarizes their careers will be ruined through reputation and sometimes public figures may

be sued by the source that the crime was committed against (6 Consequences of Plagiarism.

(n.d.).

Many people go through their life without having to worry about plagiarizing because

either they are not ‘important enough’ for people to recognize that they are copying other

people’s words or that they do not publicize their writing. Regardless of how someone writes,

taking information that another person has accumulated is illegal and can have ramifications. To

be sure that your business, blogging and writing does not get accused of plagiarism the writer

should keep the information, designs and writing as personal and original as possible. If someone

is undeniably themselves during their works then they should never be accused of plagiarism.

There are so many works of art on the internet and social media that content will be duplicated

and sometimes is unavoidable, but a good way to try to avoid this is by using a plagiarism

checker (How Can Plagiarism Affect Your Professional Career? (2020)).
