A lead apron is a type
of protective clothing
that acts as a radiation
shield.
Antoine Béclère a French doctor and
scientist was a first person to
introduce lead apron and lead
rubber gloves in 1906.
 In his lead apron he used 100%
lead.
WHY
LEAD?????
 His apron was effective but was
heavy and inconvenient to use
for prolonged period of time.
(weight >5kg)
polyvinyl chloride (PVC),synthetic
rubber, stabilizers.
 Apron generally comes in three
thickness 0.25 ,0.35, 0.50 or1.00
mm

Shielding ability can be increase

with increase in thickness of lead.
CATAGORIES:
1) Standard lead
2)Lead composition(light
weight)
3) Lead Free(zero
lead) :………
Is it only
lead that
protects????
• Lead Free apron
Lead is not a desirable material for
use in wearable radiation protection
due to its heavy weight, inflexibility,
poor durability, ineffective for all
kind of radiation and toxicity.
Every year more than 150,000 lead
aprons are disposed of, adding in
excess of one million pound of toxic
lead metal waste across the globe.

Although there are safe ways to

recycle lead garments, the lead-free
alternative is easier to recycle,
without posing as a potential
environmental pollutant.
Weight of the apron will increase depending on
the level and areas of protection required.
Standard lead apron are well-suited for shorter
procedure.
The lead composite (light weight) apron are
good for short to medium length procedure.
The lead free (ultra-light)apron are excellent for
all length of procedure especially longer
procedure.
