“Your Song”

We see a lot of different written works in our world today that portray different types of

love. Songs are one of the most common ways of expressing love. Multiple different groups and

artists have become famous because of their love songs that are directed towards a variety of

different people. A popular singer and songwriter that is famous for his love songs is Elton John.

One of his most popular love songs he wrote was “Your Song”. This is a true example of a

certain type of love being expressed. This song uses different love languages and elements of

music to describe an eros love as it relates to a lot of different love songs we see today.

The song “Your Song” by Elton John truly portrays an eros love that is directed towards a

woman in Elton’s life. In the song, Elton sings of how he does not have much to his name, but he

will offer anything he has for this girl. He describes how he doesn’t have a lot of money, but if

he did, he would buy her multiple gifts. He then tells of what he does have to offer her including

the actual song he is singing. This song demonstrates Elton’s strong personal feelings towards

this girl. He gifts the girl a song in which he pours all of his feelings into demonstrating the

strong eros love being shown. Along with all of the things Elton says he will do for this girl, he

also describes her beauty throughout the song. The lyrics are significant because they give

meaning to the love being described by Elton and they help him portray his love for this girl.

This song also uses certain love languages to demonstrate the eros love being portrayed.

In the song the artist use words of affirmation and acts of service He uses words of

affirmation when he says “I want you bad as ever Don't let me just let up I wanna give you

better.” He uses acts of service when in the song he says “Givin' you the world, baby, when you

get space.” He also exclaims “If you were mine you would top everything suicide in the drop

switchin' lanes.” He is letting her know that he has the type of money to give her what she likes.

For this song I think the beat adds the most to the theme because it is a melodic type beat. Which

is soothing and can be interpreted as a beat for a love song before hearing the words. The beat is

also slow which helps you hear and understand the words of the song clearly.

As the writer J.R.R. Tolkien said, “I rather spend one lifetime with you, than face all the

ages of this world alone.” It seems like he represents that you may only be a person in the world,

but once I fell in love with you, you are my whole world. “Your Song” and the poem “Before

You Came” wrote by Faiz Ahmed Faiz share the similar eros love, both authors treat their lover

as their whole world. The repetition of lyrics “how wonderful life is while you’re in the world”

in “Your Song”, and the description of how Faiz’s world has been lighten up and became

different because of his lover’s existence, these evidences showed that both authors placed great

emphasis on the importance of their lovers. The existence of their lovers has made the world

look differently than what it was, it becomes more colorful, meaningful, and unforgettable.

Moreover, the similarity is also found between “Your Song” and the movie “Lion”. I found that

the word affirmation where Guddu promised that he will buy many red funnel cakes and buy a

big funnel cake shop to Saroo when he has money is similar to the lyrics “I’d buy a big house

where we both could live.” Although these are different types of love, however, both eros love

and storge love show the evidence of word affirmation. I also found the similarity of acts of

service between song “All My Loving” by Beatles and “Your Song”. The lyrics “I will write

home every day, and I will send all my loving to you” in “All My Loving” is similar to John put

down all his loves in words, and made a love song to his lover. Both writing love letter and love

song present a type of act of service to their lover.

“Your Song” is truly a common example of a work that portrays eros love throughout

different love languages and elements of music. Even though multiple songs portray the same

love as this song, it still has its own unique message. People in our world today that are in

romantic relationships can relate to this song. It can teach them the importance of how to portray

your love and that you always have a lot to offer. Elton John truly puts eros love into light with

his strong lyrics in this song.
