Result and Analysis
I got 10 out of 10. However, I believe I have yet a lot to learn because I do love learning new
things and ideas. And answering this activity thought me that our self is not just ‘I’ and ‘me’, its beyond
more than what we think it is.

III. Activity 3: Comparing

Critical Thinking
1. “All individuals have an imperfect, impermanent aspect to him.”

2. ” The goal of every human person is to attain communion and bliss with the Divine by living his
life on earth in virtue.”

3. “The body is nothing else but a machine that is attached to the mind. The human person has it
but it is not what makes man a man.”

Socrates - When Socrates said that the soul is the essence of the human person, I think he
meant that it is the essence of humans to think and will. Indeed, for us to attain the Good Life,
we need to examine our life (knowing what is right and doing what is right). This seems to be a
problem in Socrates’s concept of the self. Socrates seems to think that humans were angels,
that once they know the right thing to do, they act accordingly.

Rene Descartes – He explained that the act of being self-conscious is within the self. In line
with this, a soul and a body which are not independent of one another will not exist and
function without the other. I believe he meant that selves are beings that think which is
not entirely wrong if I think about it.

David Hume - Hume’s understanding of the self as the bundle of perceptions and imaginations as he
believed that there is no self. However, if there is no self, what do we call ourselves? I believe that my
self is within me and without it, I am not who I and everyone think I am.

Immanuel Kant – He stated that self is not only personality but also seat of knowledge wherein self
uses intelligence to synthesize all experiences and organize different impressions that one gets in
relation to the existence of the self. I like how he came up with apparatus of mind that describes time
and space as ideas that is present in our minds but cannot be seen in the rea world.

7. Gilbert Ryle - The self is basically our behavior. This concept provided the philosophical
principle, “I act therefore I am”. In short, the self is the same as bodily behavior. If we
talk about reality, this concept will be the most acceptable concept for me as we all
know that what we do and how we make decisions makes us who we are.

8. Merleau Ponty – His concept explained that all the knowledge of ourselves and our world
is based on subjective experiences. It is more on how we view and give perceptions. It
matches my belief that our experiences and challenges represent us, build us and
changes us. The self can never be truly objectified.
