Worst floods In Malaysia

From 15 December 2014 to 3 January 2015, Malaysia experienced its worst floods. The states of
Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang were the worst hit. These states suffer from floods on an annual
basis however, the strong winds and exceptionally heavy rains during that period made the floods
even worst.
The 2014 -2015 floods have been referred to as the worst flooding in over 30 years. About 21
people lost their lives and more than 200 000 were affected by the floods, where there had to leave
their homes. Around 100 tourists were stranded in Taman Negara. They were rescued using a boat
and helicopter and transferred to a flood relief centre.
The state of Kelantan recorded the most evacuees at 24 765 people. The train services along
the East Coast route were distrupted on 18 December. By 23 December, most rivers in the states of
Pahang, Kelantan, Terengganu, and Perak had reach dangerous level. In Sabah, about 30 villages were
affected when the water level in Padas River rose to 9.26 metres above the danger level. On 29
December, several villagers located in the upper Baram River, Sarawak were hit by floods.
By 2 January 2015, floodwaters receded and the number of evacuees in Pahang, Perak,
Kelantan and Terengganu reduced. However, the number of evacuees increased as floodwaters rose in
Kota Belud, Sabah.
As of 28 December 2014, 340 schools throughout the country were either converted to flood
relief centres of affected by the flood waters. As a result, all primary and secondary schools in the
country started the new year of schooling one week later than usual. This was done so the schools met
the cleanliness and safety standards for the children. Universities of Kelantan and Terengganu were
also affected and students had to leave the universities. The universities also had to conduct their
examination later.
As a result of floods, there were a shortage of food supply and clean water. There was
distruption in electricity supply and people faced difficulty in carrying out their banking needs. Some
flood victims survived on donated items while others relied on a supply of bread, rice, eggs, and
canned sardines at the relief centres.
Prices of some essential items such as bottled water, candle, sardines cans and petrol rose
sharply due to demand. Even fee charged for boat rides to get across the Pahang River increased.
