Design of wiring lay-out for a residence and estimate the quantity of materials
Pre – Lab Questions
1. What is the difference between an isolator and Miniature Circuit Breaker?
Ans- Isolator cuts out a portion of a substation when a fault occurred. The other devices
operate without any interruption. The Circuit breaker is a device known as an
Automatic circuit breaker (ACB) or Miniature circuit breaker (MCB), which trips the entire
system if any fault occurs and thus the whole system is affected
2. How much the current in the sub circuit wiring to switch board in Hall?
Ans- There are two types of sockets in the home.
Normal: Current up to 5 Amp can be drawn. Used for TV, hair dryer, table lamp etc.
Power Socket: Current up to 15 Amp. can be drawn. Suitable for Fridge, Heater, washing
machine etc.
Socket size.
Ans- 5 PVC wires can be drawn in a 19mm PVC pipe for wiring

Experiment – 3
Design of wiring lay-out for a residence and estimate the quantity of materials
Post – Lab Questions
1. What is the cross-sectional area of a SWG No. 14 copper wire used for earthing?
Ans- SWG (Standard wire gauge) of no.14 is 3.24sq.mm
2. How much the current carrying capacity of various PVC copper wires with respect to
its cross-sectional area?
Ans- 1. 0.75 sq mm = 15A
1. 1.00 sq mm = 19A
3. 1.50 sq mm = 24A
4. 2.5 sq mm = 32A
3. Why the multi stranded copper wire is used for wiring than single strand wire?
Ans- Due to its flexible nature and low susceptibility to cracking and metal fatigue the
multi stranded copper wire is used over single stranded wire. Hence, suitable of
bending to a greater extent.
5. What is the current capacity of SWG No.8 G.I. Wire used for earthing and mention
where it is used?
Ans- . Current capacity of SWG No.8 G.I. Wire is 25575kcmil/A. It is used for large
household appliances like central air conditioning
