Experiment – 7

Design of wiring lay-out for a residence and estimate the quantity of materials
Pre – Lab Questions
1. What is the difference between an isolator and Miniature Circuit Breaker?
Ans- Isolator cuts out a portion of a substation when a fault occurred. The other devices
operate without any interruption. The Circuit breaker is a device known as an
Automatic circuit breaker (ACB) or Miniature circuit breaker (MCB), which trips the entire
system if any fault occurs and thus the whole system is affected

2. How much the current in the sub circuit wiring to switch board in Hall?
Ans- There are two types of sockets in the home.

Normal: Current up to 5 Amp can be drawn. Used for TV, hair dryer, table lamp etc.

Power Socket: Current up to 15 Amp. can be drawn. Suitable for Fridge, Heater, washing
machine etc.

Current capacity for the socket is decided by …

Wiring cable size.

Protective switch gear.

Socket size.

Total allowable power allocated by the Electric Supply Company.

3. What are the components in Main Board?

Ans. The incoming cables
Outgoing circuit conductors
Knife switch
Load break switch
Earthing Switch
Circuit Breaker
Fuses
Protection Relays

4. Draw various types of switches used in wiring.

Ans-
5. How many 1.5 mm PVC wires can be drawn in a 19 mm PVC pipe for wiring?
2

Ans- 5 PVC wires can be drawn in a 19mm PVC pipe for wiring

6. Write the purpose of HDBC wire used in residence wiring.

Ans. Solid and stranded (classes AA and A) bare copper are suitable for overhead
transmission and distribution applications.
Stranded conductor of greater flexibility (classes B and C) are suitable for uninsulated
hook up, jumpers, and grounds in electrical construction. Soft Drawn copper is unilay
construction

Determination and Arrangement of sub circuits
No. of sub circuits = Connected load / 800 watts
For sub circuit-1 (hall room) = 7
For sub circuit-2(bedroom and bathroom point) = 7

For sub circuit -3(kitchen room) = 4

Total = 18

Calculation of line current

Line current =   Connected load / (voltage x powerfactor)
= 2200/230×0.8
= 11.965 (say 12 Amps)

Length calculation

Total length of pvc copper conduit type =20m+25m+11m=56m (Say 60m)

Length and size of PVC pipe / copper wire / earth wire

PVC Pipe
For sub circuit 1 = 20m
For sub circuit 2 =25m
For sub circuit 3= 11m
Total = 56m (say- 60m)
PVC Copper wire
Length of wire 60m × 3 = 180m
Wastage = 10% = 18m
Total = 198m (say 200m)
Earth wire
Length of 14SWG earth wire = length of pvc conduit = 60m

Wastage = 10% = 6m

Total = 66m

Experiment – 3
Design of wiring lay-out for a residence and estimate the quantity of materials
Post – Lab Questions
1. What is the cross-sectional area of a SWG No. 14 copper wire used for earthing?
Ans- SWG (Standard wire gauge) of no.14 is 3.24sq.mm

2. How much the current carrying capacity of various PVC copper wires with respect to
its cross-sectional area?
Ans- 1. 0.75 sq mm = 15A
1. 1.00 sq mm = 19A
3. 1.50 sq mm = 24A
4. 2.5 sq mm = 32A

3. Why the multi stranded copper wire is used for wiring than single strand wire?
Ans- Due to its flexible nature and low susceptibility to cracking and metal fatigue the
multi stranded copper wire is used over single stranded wire. Hence, suitable of
bending to a greater extent.

4. How to calculate the rating of MCB used in each sub circuit?

Ans- . To calculate rating of MCB, the current value should be 125% more than the
current value. For example, if current is 10A , then rating of MCB will be
125*10=12.5A

5. What is the current capacity of SWG No.8 G.I. Wire used for earthing and mention
where it is used?
Ans- . Current capacity of SWG No.8 G.I. Wire is 25575kcmil/A. It is used for large
household appliances like central air conditioning

6. List few PVC accessories used in concealed type wiring.

Ans-1. PVC wire troughs
2. PVC saddles
3. PVC couples
4. PVC conduit
5. PVC casing-capping
6. PVC insulated copper wires and jackets
