INTRODUCTION
This is the simplest situation, and also the most common. A single switch operates the light. One
wire connects to COM and the other wire L1 . A piece of brown sleeving is used on the blue
wire, as both wires are live. The earth connects to a terminal in the back or to a single insulated
terminal block. It must be covered with a length of green / yellow sleeving. Do not cut the earth
wire off.

SWITCH WIRES
As described on the other pages, the two switch wires are both live. The switch just connects
the two wires together when it is on.

CAUTIONS
As one of the switch wires will always be live, always turn off the power at the consumer unit
before replacing a light switch.

When replacing a light switch, make sure that the wires are not trapped behind the plate fixing
screws.

SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Learner should be able to draw an one way lighting circuit.

2. Learner should in a position to list tools and materials required to wire a one way lighting
circuit.

3. Leaner should be able to wire a one way lighting circuit on board.

4. Leaner should be able to test and commission a one way lighting circuit.

STUDENT TRAINING MANUAL

A training manual is a set of instructions that improve the quality of job, process or task is performed.
The best training manuals are easy to follow, informational guides. The lay out concepts in a clear
language, using relevant examples. Done right a training manual becomes a trusted resource for trainers
and trainees.

HOW MANY LIGHJTS CAN YOU HAVE IN A CIRCUIT
In the modern domestic properties, the main electric lighting circuits are separate from the power ring
main circuit. Each household should ideally have atleast two lighting circuits, each protected by a 5amp
fuse or a 6amp trip in the consumer unit.

WHAT IS THE SPECIFIC BS7671 REQUIREMENT FOR DOMESTIC LIGHTING

4RCD protection for domestic lights; An additional protection from a 30Ma RCD is required for all lighting
circuits in domestic properties, without excerption. This requirement for RCD protection for lights ONLY
applies to domestic properties.

IS A 1mm CABLE OK FOR LIGHTING

1mm unless exceptionally long runs or other unusual circumstances need larger. 1mm will be run at lrss
than half of its rating in most circumstances, if we consider 1.5 to be needed for lighting, then the same
logic for a 32amp radial we should select suitable cable for about 60amps.
4. TESTING AND INSPECTION OF A ONE WAY LIGHTING CIRCUIT
HOW DO YOU CHECK CONTINUITY IN A LIGHTING CIRCUIT
An electrical continuity testing is the checking of an electrical circuit to see if the current flows
throughout the circuits. Continuity test is performed by applying a small voltage to one end of the circuit
and measuring on the other end.

HOW DO YOU TEST A LIGHTING CIRCUIT WITH A MULTIMETER

How do you test a light socket

1. Hold either lead on a metal socket casing.
2. Touch the bulb at the bottom of the socket with the other lead.
3. Record the reading, if it is somewhere closes to 120v, and then the fixture is good.

HOW DO YOU TEST A DEAD CIRCUIT

Circuit loop test (Dead circuit)

(to record R1 + R2) connect the live end of the cable to the tester, then connect the neutral to the
tester. Ensure that at the end of the circuit (i.e. at the furthest socket) that you short out the live and
neutral conductors. Perform this task using a mega in ohms. This result is R1+R2. The procedure for
providing dead is to take your voltage indicator and check it against a known source, such as providing
unit, then test the circuit, then test the voltage indicator against the known source again to prove tester
has not failed during testing.

ELECTRICAL TESTS METHODS FOR A DEAD CIRCUIT

1. Continuity test
This is to be performed on dead circuit for checking continuity. Using an audible continuity tester can do
it.

2. Insulation test
This is another test performed on a dead circuit only. The objective is to check for insulation of cables or
a power circuit.

HOW CAN YOU USE A MULTIMETER TO PROVE DEAD CIRCUIT

Why can’t i use a millimetre or non-contact voltage detector to prove dead; the reason why a
multimetre is not suitable is that it is all easy to select the wrong range. In addition, the multimter relies
on battery power to function, thus there is a high risk of making a false dead reading on a live circuit.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHEN WORKING ON A ONE WAY LIGHTING CIRCUIT

1. Always use insulated tools.
2. Never use equipment with frayed cords, damaged insulation or broken plugs.
3. Know the wire code for your country.
4. Avoid water at all times when working with electricity.
5. Never use an aluminium steel ladder when you are working on a receptacle at height in your
home.
6. Do not overload your outlets.
CONCLUSION/SUMMARY
A one way lighting circuit is a simple circuit that enables one circuit to be switched on or off with one
switch. The single, circuit may have one or more lights in it. This type of circuit uses a one way switch.
