Experiment – 1
RESIDENTIAL HOUSE WIRING USING SWITCHES AND LAMP

Pre-Lab Questions
1.why the earth pin is bigger in size?
The earth pin is bigger due to its contact surface area.when the current carrying through the
circuit exceeds the designed and desired limit the fuse melts and break the circuit or circuit
breakers trips thud cutting the flow of current.the fault current has to be large enough for these
safety devices to work thus this can only be ensured if the earth connections are good enough to
let large amount of fault current to pass through.the contact between the earth pins and the socket
is a potential weak point thus larger surface area ensures the point of contact is maintained .

2. What are the types of circuits are used in residential wiring?

There are two type of electrical circuits used in residential wiring namely
SERIES&PARALLEL.
SERIES CIRCUIT:-a series circuit is a circuit where the resistors are arranged in a chain
pattern. The current flow in only one direction and all the resistors will be recieving same amount
of current.
PARRALEL CIRCUIT:-a parallel circuit has two or more paths for the current to flow
through.voltage will remain constant on each component of the parallel circuit though the current
will not remain the same . the net sum of current on all the components is equal to the total
current flowing through the circuit.

3. What is the material used for fuse?

The fuse elements widely used are zinc, copper, silver, aluminium or alloys to provide
stable and predictable characteristic properties.the fuse carry a rated current through out
the circuit and melts quickly to a small excess of current.

4. What is Miniature Circuit Breaker?

A miniature circuit breaker is a electromechanical device used to interrupt the excess
flow of current flowing through the circuit thus protecting the electronic devices from
electrocuting.
It prevents short circuiting as well as overloading.

1. What are the colours of wires used for wiring?

The standard for electrical wiring colour code in India as follows.according to the old Indian
standards red is used for live power conductor.black for neutral and green for earth(ground).
The new colour code for electrical wiring is brown for live conductor, blue for neutral, green
for earth
Experiment No.
Residential house wiring using switches and lamp

Objective
To implement residential house wiring using switches and lamps

Apparatus Required
Sl. No. Specifications of Instruments / Apparatus Quantity
(Nos.)
1 AC voltage sources 1
2 Switches 2
3 Incandescent lamp 2
4 Fuses 2
4 Wires As required

Software Required:

Procedure
1. Give the connections as per the circuit diagram in multisim.
2. Give 230 V, 50Hz Input to the AC voltage source.
3. Check the status of the lamp under open and closed switches.
4. Plot the voltage waveform across the lamp.

SIMULATION DIAGRAM:
Result
The wiring suitable for residential purpose using lamps were done and it was tested.

Residential house wiring using switches, indicators, lamp and energy meter
Post – Lab Questions
1. Why the phase conductor is connected to a switch?
The phase conductor cannot be turned off when its under neutral load. The solution to this
problem is to place the switch at the live wire (because live wire is always at higher potential
and neutral wire is at 0 potential).this placement of switch makes the appliance to keep
infinite potential.

2. Why the CFL lamps are mostly used nowadays?

CFL lamps are the smaller version of fluorescent lamps.but CFLs use one-fifth of the electric
power and last 15 times batter than fluorescent lamps providing same amount of visible light.
3. What is the meter constant in an energy meter?
Energy meter constant is the amount of KWH used in its low voltage circuit for each
revolution of the induction disc

4. What are the supply systems available for residential wiring?

AC and DC are used in supply systems for residential wiring.

5. Why the incandescence lamps are not mostly used?

Incandescence lamps are not used due to its in-efficiency.the power is mostly used to
generate heat rather than light.
