Types of wiring – Staircase wiring, Fluorescent wiring and Godown

wiring
Pre – Lab Questions
1. What is the use of starter in fluorescent lamp?
The fluorescent starter is a time-delay switch that opens after a second or two .when the
switch is open the voltage across the tube allows a stream of electrons to flow across the
tube and ionize the mercury vapour. With out this starter the stream of electrons is not
created between the filaments and the lamp flickers.
2. How the white light is produced from the fluorescent lamp?
Fluorescent lamp mainly produces ultraviolet rays.electrons emited from the electrode
collide with the mercury atoms thus this causes the mercury atoms to obtain enough
energy to enter the excited state and the outer most electrons jumps into higher orbit.due to
the unstablity of the mercury atoms they return to the ground state thus releasing the
energy acquired in form of ultraviolet rays.the inside of the lamp is a coated with a
fluorescent material which in turn converts the UV rays into visible white light.

3. What is fluorescence?
Fluorescence is the emission of electromagnetic radiation usually in the visible spectrum
.it is caused by the atoms reverting back to the ground states from excited state.atoms
mainly acquire energy from xrays or electrons and jump to higher orbit instantly (with in
about 10-8 seconds).since its a instant process as soon as the energy is stopped the
fluorescence stops

4. What type of switch is used in staircase wiring?

Staircase wiring connection mainly uses 2 way switches and intermediate switchs to
control a light point from three different places.

2 way switch:-the main purpose of two way switching connection is to connect and
control AC appliances and equipment from two separate locations.

Intermediate switch:- are used for when there are three switches (or more)
controlling one light. An example of this could be on a landing, with a switch at the
bottom of the stairs, at the top of the stairs and at the end of the landing space.

5. What is the significance of staircase wiring?

The main purpose of two way switching connection is to connect and control AC
applications from two separate location.its mostly used in staircase wiring where a light bulb
can be controlled from separate from different places places,no matter you are in the upper or
lower portions of the stairs.its also used in rooms having large area which has two entry and
exit gates.

6. What is the advantage of godown wiring?

The advantage of godown wiring is the previous load will be turned off when we normally
switch ON the next load.in godown wiring ,the loads are not controlled by a random
switching.the user should follow linear squence in the switching, from one end to another.to
close the circuit on a fnal load the remaining switches should be on. That is the load is in series
with remaining switches from the begining end .so the circuit opens if any off the previous
switches has flipped off.

7. How many switches are required for godown wiring?

Three switches are used for the smiplicity .the ware house has three lights and switches.

8. What is the application of godown wiring?

It is needed in tunnel like structures ,warehouses, long passages, big godowns having lots of
room and different portions.it was the best choice to save electricity and energy consumption
where only one load that is light bulb can be operated at a time.

Post – Lab Questions
1. What is the function of choke in the fluorescent lamp?
The choke or starter is used to limit the flow of current flow through the tube.it can be used
to provide the needed inductive forming a momentarily higher voltage pulse to start the
lamp .

2. What is the voltage developed at the time of starting in fluorescent lamp?

As we know fluorescent lamp uses starter or choke to create a high voltage state inside the
the lamp .it normally require around 200 to 600 volt.

3. What type of circuit is used for fluorescent lamp wiring?

Series circuit is used in fluorescent lamp wiring.
4. What is the difference of direct and cross connections of staircase wiring?
The difference between direct and cross connections of staircase wiring is in a direct connection of
staircase wiring the similar poles of the SPDT switches are connected to each other whereas in a
Cross connection of staircase wiring the unlike poles of the SPDT are not connected to each other.

5. What is series and parallel connection?

PARALLEL CONNECTION:-
A circuit composed solely of components connected in parallel is known as a parallel circuit. In a
parallel circuit, the voltage across each of the components is the same, and the total current is
the sum of the currents flowing through each component.

SERIES CONNECTION:-
A circuit composed solely of components connected in series is known as a series circuit. In
a series circuit, the current that flows through each of the components is the same, and the
Voltage across the circuit is the sum of the individual voltage drops across each component. In a
series circuit, the sum of the voltages consumed by each individual resistance is equal to the
source voltage. Components connected in series are connected along a single conductive path,
so the same current flows through all of the components but voltage is dropped (lost) across
each of the resistances.

6. Why the switch is connected in series with the lamp?

Lamps can be connected in series or parallel in an electronic circuit, switches can
be connected in series or parallel. For example, two circuits that each use a pair of
SPST switches to turn a lamp on or off. In the first circuit, the switches are wired in
series. If several lamps are connected in series they will all be switched on and off
together by a switch connected anywhere in the circuit. The supply voltage is divided
equally between the lamps
