GLOSSARY- WEEK 3
Estimated time of arrival (ETA) – (n) the
estimated time at which the aircraft will arrive at its
destination.
Estimated time of departure (ETD) – (n) the
estimated time at which the aircraft will depart.
Heavy: (n) a plane with a take-off weight more than
136000 kilograms
Cabin crew: (N) airline staff who work directly
with passengers
Landing gear (main): (n) the wheels underneath
they aircraft that are the closest to its center of
gravity
Landing gear (nose): (n) the wheel(s) underneath
the front of the aircraft.
Tower controller: (n) an ATCO who manages
aircraft movements from the tower
Stand: (n) a parking space for an airplane where
passengers get on and off the plane
ILS: (n) instrument landing system
Passengers flight: (n)
an airplane carrying people rather than goods
Pilot: (n) a person who flies an aircraft
Co- pilot: (n) a pilot who helps the main pilot on
an aircraft
Seaman recruit: (n) a new sailor in an organization
Clearance: (n) official permission given by
controller for an aircraft to take an action
Flight level: (n) a measurement, based on
atmospheric pressure.
ATC: (n) Air traffic control
ATCO: (n) Air traffic control officer
Heading: (n) the direction in which a plane is
pointing
Hectopascal: (n) a unit of atmospheric pressure
Corporal: (n) a person of low rank in the army or
the air force
Lieutenant: (n) (the title of) an officer of middle
rank in the armed forces
ASAP: As soon as possible
Violent: (adj) using force to hurt or attack
Remove: (n) to take something or someone away
from somewhere, or off something
Drunk: (adj) unable to speak or act in the usual way
because of having had too much alcohol
Aggressive: (adj) behaving in an angry and violent
way towards another person
Flew: (v) PAST SIMPLE OF fly
Hit: (v) to touch something with sudden force
Spoiler: (n) a hinged surface on the upper wing
which, when opened, decreases lift and increases
drag
Engine: (n) a machine that converts energy into
mechanical force or motion
Wear: (n) damage or loss of quality by use
Windscreen: (n) the front window of an aircraft
through which the pilot has forward vision
Undercarriage: (n) the landing gear of an aircraft
Leading edge: (n) the front part of the wing which
meets the oncoming air first
Tyre: (n) a rubber covering for a wheel 16.
Radome: (n) a dome that protects a radar antenna,
made from materials that do not interfere with the
transmission
Nose: (n) the extreme forward end of the aircraft
Slat: (n) a movable device on the leading edge of a
wing which, when extended, creates a gap that
allows air to pass smoothly over
light: (n) a source of light such as a lamp.
Aileron: (n) a horizontal control surface hinged to
the main plane, which enables an aeroplane to bank
or roll
Fuselage: (n) the central body of a plane, to which
the wings and tail assembly are attached and which
accommodates the crew, passenger
Tailfin:(n) the front part of the wing which meets
the oncoming air first
Rudder: (n) a control surface on the fin which
rotates the aircraft about its vertical axis to produce
yaw
Emergency exit: (n) a way out only to be used in
case of an emergency
Winglet: (n) an upturned wing tip or small
additional vertical aero foil on a wing tip
Flap: (n) a movable control surface on the trailing
edge of an aircraft wing, used primarily to increase
lift and drag during final approach and landing
Elevator: (n) a movable control surface, usually
attached to the horizontal stabilizer of an aircraft,
used to produce the nose up/
Aerial: (n)a device to send or receive radio or TV
signals.
