Adding and Subtracting Fractions

60 Minutes
September 21, 2020

Common Core:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NF.A.1
Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing
given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or
difference of fractions with like denominators.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NF.A.2
Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole,
including cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to
represent the problem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate
mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers.

Educational Objectives:
1. The students will be able add and subtract fractions with different denominators.
2. The students will be able to apply these skills in applications and real-world examples.
Assessment on Learning:
1. Academic Language: Notes sheet that discusses the vocabulary
2. Content: Problems on the notes
3. Manipulative: Deck of Cards game to create new problems
Central Focus:
The students will focus on understanding how to add and subtract fractions that do not
have the same denominator.
Academic Language:
Fraction - a numerical quantity that is not a whole number.
Denominator - the number below the line in a common fraction; a divisor.

Materials Required for Lesson:

Teacher
 Dry erase board
 Dry erase markers
 Notes sheets for students to follow along
 Answer Key to problems on notes
 Deck of Cards

Students
 Pencil
 Eraser
 Paper
 Notes (Provided by the teacher)

Set or Attention Getter:

The teacher will start class with a review of adding and subtracting fractions with a common
denominator. This will act as a refresher so that the students do not get lost when moving into the
new material.

Sequences of Activities:
a. Attention Getter (10 mins)
b. Pass out notes to students
c. Academic Language (5 mins)
d. Decimals- a fraction whose denominator is a power of ten and whose numerator
is expressed by figures placed to the right of a decimal point
Percentages- a rate, number, or amount in each hundred.
e. Go through the notes with the students (25 mins)
f. Manipulative: The students will use the manipulative of a deck of cards in order to play
a fraction speed game. The students will draw 4 cards total with two representing the
numerator and two being the denominator. From there they will subtract and add the
fractions while racing against their partners (20 mins)

Questions to Ask:
1. When changing the denominator, what must be done to the numerator? Knowledge.
2. When do we see fractions being used in the real world? Analysis

Conclusion:
The teacher will ask if there are any remaining questions about the lesson.
