Deepening:

What is the role of the institution where the researcher is affiliated as far as observing ethics in
research is concerned?

The role of the institution is vital of importance to the researchers, Ethic code is intended to
guide researchers and standards of professional conduct. When researchers are making decisions
regarding their professional behavior, they must consider the ethical standard of the institution
that they are part of, also, they need to consider the applicable law and the board regulation. For
instance, for a certified public accountant, they must follow the fundamental principles within
the international code of ethics for professional Accountants. What is the role of the institution
where the researcher is affiliated as far as observing ethics in research is concerned?
It guides researchers, the ethical standard set by the institution that they are affiliated with will
help them make an ethical decision. The following are some of the general principles that
researchers and professional follows.

Honesty and Integrity, this means that the researcher will report their finding with truthfulness,
meaning that they need to give data and results without misrepresenting what they find. For
instance, the case of Enron, wherein top officials of the company abuse their power and
privileges by manipulating information. A 2002 survey by the Ethics Resource Center found that
43% of respondents believed that their bosses fail to model integrity and felt pressure to
compromise their ethical standards at work (Wee, 2002).

Respect of Intellectual Property, A researcher should never plagiarize or copy other researchers'
work, the best thing to do is to ask for permission before using other researcher’s ideas, data, or
methods, not only that but respecting copyrights and patents. For instance, the case of Karen
Ruggiero, wherein she fabricated data in studies.

Respect for People’s Rights and Dignity, Researchers and Professionals should respect the
dignity and worth of all people, and the rights of individuals to privacy, confidentiality, and self-
determination.

These are some of the general principles that the researcher and professional need to consider
when making decisions. It is vital that researchers and professional need to consider because it
has been an important factor in ethics, rules, and regulation. The following are honesty and
integrity, respect for intellectual property, and respect for people’s rights and dignity.

Reflection:
Do you think there will be lack of dynamism in research if there are too many ethical
considerations? What is your point of view on this matter.
I think that individuals or researchers, in particular, will eventually find a way to still
generate/create research that will make a difference even if there is too many ethical
consideration. But then again there is an instance wherein being ethical will outweigh the cost
vice versa. For instance, the case wherein a researcher need to act like someone else to gather
data for their research.
