Area/Volume Review
Grade Level/Class: Algebra I
Time Length: 60 minutes

Standards (include NCTE/NCSS/NGSS/NCTM/ACTFL):

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.MG.A.3
Apply geometric methods to solve design problems (e.g., designing an object or structure to
satisfy physical constraints or minimize cost; working with typographic grid systems based on
ratios).
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.MG.A.1
Use geometric shapes, their measures, and their properties to describe objects (e.g., modeling a
tree trunk or a human torso as a cylinder).
Educational Objectives:
● The students will be able to translate their area and volume formulas to real-life objects.
● The students will be able to create their own applications by applying geometric methods
and using the correct measures.

Assessment on Learning:
 “Create your own” Video
Central Focus
● The students will focus on applying their area and volume formulas to create their own
application problem.
Accommodations for students with specific learning needs:
● There are no accommodations needed.

Identify a learning task from your plan that provides students with opportunities to
practice using the language function identified above:
In their “Create your own” Video the students will be required to explain the different steps that
they are taking.
Additional Language Demands. Given the language function and learning task identified
above, describe the following associated language demands (written or oral) students need to
understand and/or use:
The students will have to understand the key formulas used to find the area or volume of
geometric figures.

Vocabulary:
1. Area:  The two-dimensional space taken up by an object.
2. Volume: The measurement of amount of space occupied inside the three-dimensional
space.

Anticipatory Set/ Attention Getter:

To begin the class the teacher will review the formulas for area and volume using Kahoot!. The
review will prepare the students and act as a refresher for the next activity.

Questions to Ask
1. What are the differences between applying area and volume? Knowledge
2. How would you explain the uses of these concepts in the real-world? Analysis

Sequence of Events (include time needed):

1. Anticipatory Set/Attention Getter – Kahoot! (15 mins).
2. “Create your own” Video – Student’s will be put into groups of 3 or 4. In their groups, the
students will be required to create a short video demonstrating the different ways area and
volume can be used in the real-world. The students must show and explain the steps taken to find
their answers (30 mins).
3. The class will come together, and the teacher will play the videos on the projector (15 mins).

Conclusion/Summary:
The teacher will ask if there are any remaining questions regarding the lesson.
