Scene Number : 80561020 - What Are Failure Codes?

Failure Codes are six character codes that identify the component that failed on the engine and the
nature of the failure.

Failure codes are used by the factory to summarize product issues and drive product improvements.

Scene Number : 80561030 - Assigning Failure Codes

The first two characters in a failure code identify the major system in which the failure occurred.

The second set of characters in the failure code identify the component that failed within the major
system.

The last two characters identify the mode of the failure.

All three parts of the six character code must be recorded accurately.

Failures resulting from progressive damage should not be assigned failure codes.

Once you have located the engine system you will need to identify the actual component that failed.
The individual pages in the engine system section show exploded views of various components and
their failure codes at the bottom of the page. Locate the failed component in the exploded drawing.

Notice the first two letters of the failure code are shown at the top of the page and the next two letters
of the failure code are referenced in the exploded drawing.

Finally, to locate the mode of the failure look at the bottom of the exploded view. There are a series of
codes listed under the Mode of Failure heading. You can identify the specific mode of failure by
matching it to the actual cause of the failure from the repair order. This will complete the six
characters failure code.
The user can also find a full list and descriptions of all modes of failures in the “front” section of the
failure code manuals.
