- Setting up Your Trombone!

- Take out all parts of the trombone.

- Set the outer slide on the ground, and have the longer section facing yourself,

and connect the main bell part of the trombone on top of it.

- Next, you can attach the mouthpiece. You do this like you do with the trumpet;

pushing it in gently and turning it.

- Before you can play, you must unlock the slide.

- Playing position

- Think about sitting as if you were going to sing. Very upright and on the edge of your

seat. This will allow the air to flow easier.

- Your left hand holds the 1st slide brace, and your right hand the 2nd. The trombone

rests on your shoulder as you play it.

- Making Sound!

- Make a tight embouchure, the tightness of the embouchure and the stream of air will

cause different notes to be played.

- If there is trouble creating sound, have her blow into just the mouthpiece, and create

the “duck buzz” with that.

- Teach the different slide positions; adjust to how quickly she learns.

- Teach by rote… Sing and have her repeat the notes that were sung.

- Articulation!

- Make a “tuh” sound, causing the beginning of a new note.

- Have her articulate different notes on one pitch.

- Teach by rote again… Have her perform different rhythms.

- Teach through the book.

- Have her play different beginner pieces that are presented in the book.

Be Patient! If she can’t get it at first try to simplify the concepts for her. Don’t stress her out,

seeing as it will not help her learning or playing.
