MEMORANDUM

Date: September 25, 2020

To: Dr. Nicholas Schwartz
From: Dariana Miramontes
Subject: Instruction Justification Cover Memo

The purpose of this memo is to talk about how I chose to write the following sets of instructions
and how they are different for each audience.

When writing the instructions for the average American adult I wanted to make them as short
and simple as possible since Easy Kitchen wants their products to look easy to use. I included a
small caution because cans can be sharp. I made the steps short and easy to understand by adding
a scissor example, as most American adults have used a pair of scissors before. I included one
picture to show how the can opener should be placed.

For the Easy Kitchen Jr I had the same instructions but added an adult supervision suggestion
since again cans can be sharp. I also added more pictures since I feel like children will focus
more on images rather than words.

The vocabulary for both sets of instructions stayed the same since I wanted them to be easy to
follow. I would say the only difference would be the images and a few extra precautions for the
children.

Thank you for your time. If you need any help with understanding my process feel free to contact
me at dmiramontes4@unm.edu

Hand-operated Can Opener Instructions
Warning: Be careful not to cut yourself on sharp edges.

This easy product is used to open cans. The following are 3 easy steps on how to use
this Easy Kitchen product.
1. First thing is to get the can you want to open. Get the Easy Kitchen Can Opener
and open it up like you would with scissors.
2. Place the cutting wheel on the edge of the can and close it like you would with
a pair of scissors. Make sure you feel a click as it pushes into the metal lid.
3. Twist the handle until it goes around the can and it is open.

4. Lift the lid up (be careful with the sharp lid, I recommend pushing the side of
the lid down and grabbing the tip of the opposite side out).
