Modelling and simulation of CO2 capture with ionic liquids

Type of project
M.Sc. in Engineering

Short description
CO2 capture is a viable technique to reduce the concentration of CO 2 in the atmosphere. Ionic liquids are a
promising type of solvents for CO2 capture through the absorption process. They feature high solubility and
selectivity for CO2 and have negligible vapor pressure, making them a promising liquid medium for CO 2 capture.
The proposed research project aims to study modelling, simulation, and optimization of the CO 2 capture process
with ionic liquids where the gas phase is dispersed in the liquid medium. The model is capable of handling
several potential ionic liquids that promote physical or chemical absorption of CO 2. The verified mathematical
model can be used for applications such as optimal process design.

Project milestones
• Survey literature, covering developments in modelling chemicophysical CO2 absorption in (ionic)
liquids.
• Develop a dynamic mathematical model to capture the thermodynamics and transports aspects of the
absorption process.
• Obtain an efficient simulation strategy for the dynamic model.

The ideal candidate

• Talented in process modelling and simulation
• Interested in thermodynamics and transport phenomena
• Self-starter and self-motivated
This project involves working with computational algorithms and simulation software and will give the candidate
the opportunity to work on a project that develops the candidate’s soft skills as well as technical competencies
in an agile multi-disciplinary project related to carbon capture. Also, given the collaborative nature of the work
the ideal candidate will have the ability to grow your professional network.
The project scope may be discussed depending on the interests of the candidates.
