Professional Development Plan

As I am soon approaching graduation from nursing school, I have begun to prepare for my next

goal, the NCLEX exam. Throughout the next three months, I will study and review all the information I

have acquired during the last 16 months. Also, to prepare for my role as a nurse I currently hold the

Basic Life Support certification, but I will also obtain the Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric

Advanced Life Support certifications. Next month, I will interview for a registered nurse position with

Baptist Health South Florida. Once I have successfully passed the NCLEX and have been hired, I will begin

he residency program that will last approximately 4 months. I look forward to being a skilled and

independent nurse at the completion of the program.

Moreover, once I have completed the residency program, I will begin taking courses for the RN-

BSN program at Miami Dade College. In the next three years I see myself completing the bachelor’s

degree in nursing and starting in a master’s degree program to become a nurse educator. My goal is to

combine my enthusiasm for teaching with my passion for nursing. Although I have not set my mind on

any area or specialty of nursing, I do belong to the National Association of Orthopedic Nurses. I joined

this organization as a student, after completing my first clinical rotation in an orthopedic unit. I have

gained access to a lot of resources and useful information provided to its members and because of this, I

plan to continue being part of professional organizations as I believe they help support nurses in

numerous ways.

Looking ahead into the next ten years, I see myself as a successful nurse who is well experienced

in many areas of nursing. I would like to gain knowledge and experience in various care settings with as

many diverse populations as possible. Being a well-rounded and skilled nurse is what I aspire to be.

Additionally, I would like one day to return to Miami Dade college as a nursing professor. The standards

and scope of practice of an academic nurse educator are comprised of eight competencies which

include, “facilitating learning, facilitating learner development and socialization, use of assessment and
evaluation strategies, participation in curriculum design and program outcomes, function as a change

agent and leader, pursue Continuous Quality Improvements in the Nurse Educator Role, engage in

scholarship, and function within the educational environment (National League of Nurses, 2020, para

3).” To fulfill my goal of becoming a nurse educator I will be required to maintain my registered nurse

license, obtain a master’s or doctorial degree in nursing, and a minimum of two years of employment in

an academic institution. I am sure that my hard work, dedication, and passion for nursing will lead me

into a wonderful and fulfilling lifelong career.
