“THE GREATEST OF ALL SAINTS IN ISLAM THE SAINT OF GILAN”
*SAYYEDINA HAZRAT ABDUL QADER GILANI*
1. In Gilan there once lived a boy
Abdul Qadir by name Who never had yet, said a lie And so won worldwide fame.
2. It’s said that while, yet he was young
His mother he approached With downright zeal and earnest love Her permission to broach.
3. To let him go in splendid quest
Of light and learning bright, And work with full of might and zest In spreading Divine Light.
4. His mother knowing well his worth
Would not in his way stand, But with real willingness, She placed this in his hands.
5. Forty Dinars all well told,
Her all that she possessed, A poor widow that she was She made her shift at best.
6. Saying my son, “Now Look at this”
“That I could scrape for you, But I am sending you away With greater wealth more true.”
7. My son wherever you may be
Remember your Lord as night Never forget to. Worship him NEVER EVER TELL A LIE.
8. With teary eyes and heavy sighs,
She bade her son adieu, And Qadir with a heavy heart Joined his comrades few,
9. That night as the caravan was,
Resting for a while A band of robbers none too small Broke upon them wild. 10. One by one the merchants all Were taken prisoners And even poor Qadir was Not in the least spared.
11. The Chieftain came to tether him,
And asked him jokingly “Do you chance to carry my boy Any money on. Thee”? Here I have my diners all, Tied around my waist Save which I have none by now Said Qadir in truth chaste.
12. The robber thinking it was joke
Would chance have passed along, When a doubt crossed his mind He passed his hands around 13. Lo! The money was there alright, Just as the boy had said, The robber chief was so surprised To hear the truth uttered, 14. Stuck with wonder he was to see, A boy so young, So true! Who kept his word to god and Ma Spurning money few 15. Right there the robber stood as though, As struck by bolt from blue And repenting washed clean his heart Of all its dust and dues 16. And falling on his knees he prayed As never done before And begged of HIM forgiveness Shedding tears of gore 17. From the day he turned a page In his life anew And by the miracle wrought by truth Became a disciple true. 18. God and HIS PROPHET GREAT And a Saints so young, All of whom His Blessing’s be And now my tale is done.
