History of Computer

NAME: SHANE CHESTER

CLASS: CES 1100
DATE OF SUBMISSION: 2020/11/09
LECTURE: Ms.Penelope DeFreitas
1. Compare and contrast the fields of computer science, Information
Technology and Information systems.

The difference between information systems and information technology is that information
systems incorporates the technology, people and processes involved with information.
Information technology is the design and implementation of information, or data, within the
information system.

2. Read the article “ The creation myth “

a) What drove Steve Jobs to Coyote Hill- Xerox Parc ?

Xerox had assembled the world’s greatest computer engineers and programmers, and for the
next ten years they had an unparalleled run of innovation and invention. If you were obsessed
with the future in the seventies, you were obsessed with Xerox parc—which was why the young
Steve Jobs had driven to Coyote Hill Road.
He was

b) What improvements did Apple make after viewing Xerox Parc's

personal computer?
Steve Jobs demanded that the team working on the company’s next generation of personal
computers change course. He wanted menus on the screen. He wanted windows. He wanted a
mouse, this made history.

c) What role did IDEO , Starkweather and Goldman play in the history of
computing?
In 1980, Apple asked IDEO to develop a mouse for their radical new computer, the Lisa.
Previous attempts at mouse design, by Douglas Englebart and Xerox PARC, yielded results that
were too expensive and hard to make. The Apple mouse needed to be more reliable and less
than 10 percent of the cost of the earlier versions.
At Apple Computer in the 1990s, Starkweather invented color management technology,[5] and
led the development of Colorsync 1.0.
Starkweather and Goldman had an idea for getting the laser printer to market quickly.

d) Is there a difference between Innovation and invention? If yes , what are

the differences?
Yes innovation and invention are different. Invention is the creation of a new process, product or
service. It's the practical manifestation/outcome of ideation.
Innovation is when an invention is adopted and fundamentally changes the way that we do
something. There is no Innovation without adoption. Innovation is disruptive. It changes the
landscape in some basic way.
e) Identify notable inventions and innovations that were presented in the
article.

The innovation and invention of the computer mouse

The invention of laser printers.
The invention and invention of the computer
Apple invented menu bar

3. Why was Charles Babbage’s differences Engine fully built several decades
after it was designed ?
Babbage was never able to complete construction of any of his machines due to conflicts
with his chief engineer and inadequate funding. It was not until 1941 that the first general-
purpose computer, Z3, was built, more than a century after Babbage had proposed the
pioneering Analytical Engine in 1837.

4. Is it possible to compute multiplication and division by using just the

addition and or the subtraction operation ? If yes, demonstrate with the
use of an example.

5. Apply the AI-Khwwrzmi’s principles, find the average of 5 numbers.

By using the formula we can find the average of 5 numbers :

Let
x1,x2,x3,......,xn be a set of numbers, average = (x1 + x2 + x3,+......+ xn)/n

6. For each of the given Technological Development ( columns one) state the
corresponding Generation of computers ( column two) in which this
development took place.

Technology Development Generation of Computers

Microprocessor First Generation

Artificial Intelligence Fifth Generation
Integrated Circuits Third Generation
Vacuum tubes First Generation
Transistors Second Generation
7. What is Moore’s law? How has it served as major driver for the computing
industry? Are there limits to Moore’s Law ?
Moore’s Law gets its name from Intel co-founder Gordon Moore. In 1965, he predicted that the
number of components in a computer chip would double every year. In 1975, he revised this to
every two years. He observed that as computer processing power grew, each component would
also get cheaper. Moore’s prediction proved correct: The number of components in a chip
doubled about every 18 months in the five decades since 1961. However, many experts believe
that Moore’s Law will soon no longer be valid because of the effects of quantum physics. Even
Moore admits that his law will eventually come to an end.
It served as major driver for the computing industry by pushing them to the limits for them to
challenge themselves, yes they are limits to Moore’s law transistors can only be so small and
heat must allow to decapitate for it quickly
