Unit 5 Mastery

Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title:

Counting is Cool!

Objectives:

 Students will be able to count from 1-10

 Students will be able to recall numbers and the meaning on their quantity

 Students will be able to discuss numbers 1-10 with one another

 Students will be able to compare numbers 1-10 and recognize which are bigger and

smaller

State Standards: Children demonstrate a beginning understanding of numbers and quantity

Context:

I am teaching this lesson because it is important for children to be able to count and understand

numbers and their quantities. There is no preface to this counting lesson, learning to count is the

beginning of the unit. After students learn to count, they will learn to write down the numbers,

and recognize where numbers exist in real life. Students will continue to use and build off of this

lesson in further grades, like learning how to add, multiple, and other operations that you must

know how to count in order to complete.

Unit 5 Mastery

Data: In this lesson students will be taught as one group and then go back to their seats to work

individually. The lesson will begin by introducing them to the numbers as a group and

discussing counting as a class so students can build off one another to better understand

the concept. Once the group learning is done students will be broken into small groups of

two or three to better understand the lesson on their own, but still have the help of their

peers. Students will be grouped by their understanding of the concept. Students who

participated in the class discussion and understood the lesson well will be paired with

those who don’t understand that well to see if they can aid one another. Then students

will go back to their seats and do a worksheet to see If everyone understands counting

individually. Data will be collected for future grouping by collecting their worksheets and

seeing who still needs more help and who fully grasps the concepts.

Procedures:

Introduction (10 minutes):

Unit 5 Mastery

Students will come to the rug and sit down while I begin to introduce the lesson. I will introduce

this lesson by asking a serious of questions followed by a counting video. I will ask students to

put their “thinkers” on and raise their hands if they know any numbers. I will then ask them how

many fingers they have and relate that to the lesson by telling them we are learning to count to

10 like their ten fingers. Once we discuss counting for a couple minutes I will play the YouTube

video “Count to 10” by Jack Hartman (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGL7xYEVeaY)

While the video plays I will ask them to count along with he video and hold up their fingers to

show they know what number they’re saying. I will also count along with them and show my

fingers the first couple of times we count so they have an example. By the end of the video I

won’t count with them or show my fingers and see if they re able to on their own. I will then

move into the interactive lesson portion of the day.

Teacher Directed (20 minutes):

During the teacher directed instruction the students will interact with my power point lesson and

counting materials. I will begin by continuing through my power point on counting.

FdOYu4bwEc5S3v7g5_fzg?e=YhTqul) On each slide a group of images will appear and I will

ask students to count how many they see. I will make sure to tell students to raise their hands, so

their friends have time to count in their heads as well. I will then call on a student to tell me how

many they see and help them write the number on the board. I will then relate that number to real

life and ask students to think f where else they have seen this number. Connections are key, they

will give the students a better understanding of the context. Students love coming up to the board

and interacting with the lesson because they feel proud when the are able to help you with the
Unit 5 Mastery

lesson. The power point is interactive so students can click to the next slide once we talk about

the number they counted. The interaction makes the lesson more fun and enjoyable and when

students enjoy the lesson, they are more likely to comprehend the material. Once students can

correctly identify the number that’s corelated with the quantity on the screen the PowerPoint will

switch to multiple choice questions. Instead of writing the numbers student will need to correctly

identify the number. I will call on students to come up and click the correct number, because

again interacting with the lesson makes it more enjoyable for students and therefore easier to

comprehend. Once we go through the power point I will wrap up the discussion before assigning

them to groups. I will briefly recall what we learned, ask questions, and have them count to 10

together.

Collaborative (15 minutes):

In this portion of the lesson students will be assigned to groups of two or three as COVID-19

limits the class size and students are able to better interact with one another one on one or in

smaller groups. Once I give students their partner or group of three, I will instruct them to get

their ipads and spread out around the room with their group. Students are going to use the todo

math app to practice counting the items on the screen and recognizing what number quantity

corresponds with it. Once students are sitting with their partners and have their ipads out they

will immediately log into the app. I will let student know in advance if they get on anything other

than the app on their ipads they will be taken away and that student will be sent back to their seat

and his/her group mates will join another group. Students will practice counting by looking at he

number of items on the screen and then once correctly identify the corresponding number they

will practice their writing skills and record the number on the screen. Student will be able to

communicate with their group mates and hopefully help and build off one another. I will be
Unit 5 Mastery

walking around monitoring the groups and helping those who do not quite get the concept of

counting yet. Students will use this app for roughly 15 minutes but time can adjusted depending

on their understanding of the concept. Once time is up, I will instruct students to put their ipads

away and quietly walk back to their seats. Once students are seated I will ask how they liked the

ipad activity and to give me a thumbs up, thumbs down, or thumbs in the middle to show their

understanding of counting to 10 and identifying the amount of items in a group. Once we wrap

up the ipad activity discussion and make sure the majority of the students are okay will counting,

I will begin their individual instructions.

Independent Digital (10 minutes):

In this portion of the lesson students will be completing a work sheet that utilizes their counting

skills and has them write and identify number and picture quantities. (https://coastal54-

my.sharepoint.com/:i:/g/personal/secyganie_coastal_edu/EdsKX0zbZs1Lg-

iEpXGAnMEBx8CEvVUV2hbtiG-s0PbuYw?e=FqDCka ) I will tell give them instructions

before passing out the paper to make sure they are paying attention and know what they are

doing. I will tell them I m=am handing them a worksheet that has several groups of images on it.

I will tell them count how many of the items they see and record the number in the box provided

next to the images. Once I had out the worksheets I will walk around and make sure students

know what they are doing. If everyone is still confused, I will bring us back as a group to

continue explaining the lesson. But if the majority of students are okay with the material, I will

give some extra help to those struggling. I will tell students if they finish early, they can try and

draw their own set of images and then write how many they drew. I will show them an example

on the board, like drawing 5 circles and then writing the number 5 next to it. Once students are

done with the worksheet, we will discuss the answers as a whole, and this will again let me know
Unit 5 Mastery

if they understand the concept. Once the work sheet has been gone over, they will pace in the

their baskets at their seats and make their way back to the carpet for our closure.

Closure (5 minutes):

In this closure I will briefly discuss what we went over while learning how to count 1-10. I will

then use the counting bears and other groups of objects to see if students can tell me how many

items I have. This will help the more hands on learners to physically see and be able to count and

tough the items. I will ask some more questions about counting to make sure the concept of the

lesson is understood. I will ask things like how many eyes do you have and can you hold up that

many fingers for me. By counting out loud with the students and physically counting and

displaying the number on our fingers the students will be able to cement their understanding of

counting.

Rationale:

(Multimedia 1= App or website): I chose to use the todo math app because it closely

follows without lesson and the activities that they can complete mirror those we did in the

power point. I know it is of high quality because I did research and used the app myself

first to make sure students could successfully navigate the app and understand as well as

complete the material. This supports the student’s objects and standards because it helps

students better understand the numbers 1-10 and what they mean. Students are able to

associate the number the write with the number of images they can see. This app allows

differentiation that will appeal to all students learning needs. The todo app appeals to

hands on. Visual, and auditory learners. The app is hands on as students can click the

items and write the number that the quantity represents. The app appeals to auditory
Unit 5 Mastery

learners as it reads questions aloud and will say other numbers and directions if students

need. It also appeals to visual learners because they are able to see the number of items

and associate that with the counting numbers in their heads.

(Multimedia 2= App, website, video, educational game, song, podcast, etc.): The Jack

Hartman video is a successful way to go about introducing counting because it follows

the standards and addresses numbers 1-10 which is what we are learning. Students love

Jack Hartman videos as they like to sing and dance along with the music. Getting the

students to interact and enjoy the video is important. If students have no interest in what

they are looking at why are not going to put effort into learning it. This video is also

successful as it repeats counting 1-10. Repletion is important because it helps solidify

information. This supports the learning standards because students objects are to be able

to count to 10 and understand their quantities. This video eases them into counting and

helps them remember the numbers 1-10 and their order. This is a great choice because it

appeals t all students. There is movement, music, and material all in one video. Students

are able to hear and see the numbers as well as follow along with he video. For auditory

learners they are hearing the numbers being counted, for visual learners they are seeing

the numbers displayed on the screen, and for hands on learners they are able to follow

along singing with the video and holding up their fingers to match the quantity on the

screen.
