Why facts dont change out mind

● What is the main idea or point of the article? The main idea of this
article is to explain how confirmation bias can make someone
so sure of their opinion that the facts don't get through to
them anymore.
● Who is the audience that Kolbert is addressing? How do you
know? (Describe things you noticed about the publication, the New
Yorker, w
here the article appeared, that gave you this idea.) In my
opinion, I would say that this article was written for anyone
ranging from the late teens to mid thirties. The way that this
article was written and the examples used in it seemed to be
directed towards more open minded group that is fine with
looking at things a different way.
● What might be an alternative way to analyze her conclusions? In
other words, what might be another claim that could be debated
based on her research? Another point that could be made
alongside the confirmation bias is how validation in ones
ideas can make them more sure of themselves. For example,
just the idea that the participants were taking part in a study
made them feel important and confident that their statements
had some value.
● Why do you think Kolbert wrote this article? Does she want readers
to behave in a different way? Think about something differently?
Or, something else? Kolbert wrote this article because she
wanted to inform people about how strongly confirmation bias
can change how we think about things. She wants us to take a
different approach and always look at things from a different
perspective.
● What do the visual elements in the article reveal? In other words,
what point does the painting above the title make? How do the
visuals support Kolbert's main claim? The painting above the
article ( by Gérard DuBois ) illustrates how some people are
so tied down to their own ideas and beliefs that they aren’t
able to look at how other people are seeing things.
● Do you agree with Kolbert's claims in this article? Why or why not?
Yes, I believe that confirmation bias can make a significant
change in the way that people think. Whether it be in a study,
politics, or just random debates. From personal experience, I
can say that it is very aggravating when someone has an
opinion, strengthened by numbers, that is completely empty
and baseless. It is always good to look from other
perspectives no matter the situation.
