Title: Distance: Through Global Cognizance

Summary:
Through direct instruction, the teacher will introduce the scholars to the distance formula (first
by hand then by an application on their graphing calculator). The scholars will then use Google
Earth to identify the coordinates of any two locations and then determine their distance from
one another.

Learners:
8th Grade; Geometry

Standards:
21st Century Skill(s):
 1d: Students understand the fundamental concepts of technology operations,
demonstrate the ability to choose, use and troubleshoot current technologies and are
able to transfer their knowledge to explore emerging technologies.
 5d: Students understand how automation works and use algorithmic thinking to
develop a sequence of steps to create and test automated solutions.

Common Core Standard(s):

 CCSS.Math.Content.8.G.B.8
Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to find the distance between two points in a
coordinate system.

Materials Used by the Teacher: Materials Used by the Students:

 Pre-Made Presentation:  Paper
displaying the distance formula  Pencil
and examples ready to be solved
 10-Question Worksheets (for the
scholars)

Technologies Used by the Teacher: Technologies Used by the Students:

 Interactive Smart Board  Graphing Calculator
(Computer and Projector)  iPad, Laptop, Chromebook (any device with
 Graphing Calculator access to Google Earth)

Timeline of activities (Instructional Procedures):

1. (I Do) Begin by presenting a summary of your favorite place you have been using any
platform (PowerPoint, word, google slide, etc.) displayed on the interactive smart
board.
2. (I Do) Ask the scholars to think about their favorite place that they have been or would
like to visit.
3. (You Do) Have scholars share with the person next to them what their favorite place is
and an approximation of how far it may be.
4. (I Do) Discuss the relevance of the opening activity to introduce today’s lesson,
determining the distance two points in a coordinate system by stating: “Today, I started
out class by having all of us discuss our favorite place we have been or would like to go.
In today’s lesson, we will be discussing the distance formula using Pythagorean
Theorem. By the end of class, you should all be able to determine the distance between
two different coordinates, our current location and your favorite destination.”
5. (I Do) (Pre-Assessment) Determine if the scholars have any prior knowledge of the
distance formula by simply asking the scholars to give you a thumbs up or down if they
have heard of it.
6. (I Do) Using the Interactive Smart Board, open up the presentation and begin on the
first slide presenting the distance formula d = √((x2-x1)²+(y2-y1)²).
7. (I Do) Move to the next slide in the presentation displaying the coordinates (2,4) and
(8,10). Using Pythagorean’s Theorem of the distance formula solve the equation.
 d = √((8-2)2+(10-4)2))
 d = √((6)2+(6)2))
 d = √(36+36)
 d = √(36x2)
 d = 6√(2)
8. (We Do) Move to the next slide in the presentation displaying the coordinates (5,6) and
(7,8). Help set up the equation for the scholars d = √((x 2-x1)²+(y2-y1)²); d = √((7-5)²+(8-
6)²). Then have the scholars help to finish out the rest of the equation.
9. (We Do) Move to the next slide in the presentation and do the same process as in the
previous step, but only providing the formula this time.
10. (You Do) Evaluate to see if the scholars of their understanding the process of using the
formula. If they are still not confident, continue on to do a few more examples.
11. (You Do) Move onto the next slide displaying the screen shots on how to use the
distance formula on a graphing calculator. (Make sure to still orally state the steps in
using the graphing calculator application)
 Program Button (prgm)  Algebra 1, 2 (ALGBRA12)  Enter 
Distance  Enter  Fill in the appropriate information for x1, x2, y1
and y2.
12. (We Do) Display the next slide with another example of two coordinates: (2,5) and
(3,4). Have scholars use their graphing calculators to plug in the coordinates accordingly
into the application.
 Program Button (prgm)  Algebra 1, 2 (ALGBRA12)  Enter 
Distance  Enter  x1 = 2, y1 = 5, x2 = 3 and y2 = 4.
 The answer should all then get the answer √(2)
13. (We Do) Display the next slide with another example and repeat the process in the
previous step.
14. (You Do) (Post-Assessment) Have the scholars complete a 10-question worksheet. The
first four problems they must write out by hand the distance formula. They may then
use their graphing calculator to finish the final six problems.
15. (I do) Walk around as the classroom to ensure that scholars understand the content, to
answer any questions, and/or ensure the scholars are on task.
16. (You Do) The scholars will then use their iPad, Laptop, Chromebook, etc. (any device
with access to Google Earth) to determine the coordinates of their current location and
the coordinates of their favorite destination. I will then have them use their coordinates
to determine the distance between the two locations.
17. (You Do) The scholars will then come up to the “author’s chair” to share with the rest of
the class their favorite destination and the distance they would have to travel in order
to go there.
18. (You Do) If time, review the Pythagorean Theorem’s distance formula (d = √((x 2-
x1)²+(y2-y1)²) with the scholars.

Assessment Plan:
Pre-Assessment:
 The scholars will give me a thumbs up or down. I will then determine the number of
scholars who are(n’t) familiar with the new concept.
Post-Assessment:
 I will use the children’s 10-question assignment to determine the scholar’s
understanding of the Pythagorean Theorem’s distance formula and their ability to
exercise the 21st century skills incorporated into this lesson (using their graphing
calculator as an assistive tool, using Google Earth to accurately determine their
coordinates, and actively selecting any destination around the world).
