Family/Community Connection or Extension:

Family can practice counting and clapping the syllables of the colors of
the rainbow with their children.

Pre-Assessment:
The data that I used to plan for instruction is that I observed the
students to see what topics peak their interests. I talked to each child
at center time to find out what interested them, and I documented it.
A topic that has been reoccurring is rainbows.

Lesson Procedure and Activities: (the format will depend on the
type of lesson such as ELA or science)

Introduction:
To begin the lesson, I will start with a walk through of The Rainbow
Fish. When I do this, I will ask them questions regarding the topic to
understand their prior knowledge.

Activities:
1. I will begin by playing the video version of The Rainbow Fish.
2. Then I will read through the book. This time I will stop and ask
questions regarding the book and get the children to participate
in discussions.
3. Then I will ask “what colors did you see on Rainbow Fish?” I will
point to colors on the rainbow fish as we identify them. I will
help by pointing to colors on the rainbow fish and ask, “what
color is this?” and “do you see any other colors?” I will get them
to raise their hands when answering.
4. We will then take each color and use clapping to pronounce the
syllables of each word. As we are doing this, I will hold up the
cards with the colors and the words in Spanish.
Closure:
I will give each student a chance to speak. They will say
something that they learned or something they liked about the
story. Then they will use clapping to pronounce the syllables of
their favorite color.

Differentiation:
For the non-English speaking student, I will provide a picture of the
color we are discussing, along with the name of that color in Spanish
so the child does not get lost. For the students who need help with
articulation, I will get them to sit in the front so they can clearly hear
how I pronounce each syllable of each color. For all of the children, I
will keep the lesson interesting so they can stay focused on the task. I
will do this by asking them questions often to keep them engaged and
interested.

Formative Assessment/Evaluation:
I will assess by giving each child a chance to sound out the syllables on
their own. I will let them pick their favorite color that they saw in the
book which will measure their comprehension of the book. Then I will
record them when they do it on their own to see what they learned.
