Once upon a time, a witch woman lived in a little hut on the top of the hill. She looked so
grim and people were afraid to near her. It was said that she could change people anything she
wished.
One day, two little girls who lived at the foot of the hill were playing together. They were
Golden Hair and Blue eyes. They sat down on the grassy hillside to rest.
“I should like to do something to make everybody happy, “said Blue eyes.
“So should I, “said Golden hair.
“Let ask the woman who lives on the hilltop about it. She is very wise.
“Oh, yes.” Said Blue eyes.
Then, it was a long walk to the top of the hill. Many times they stopped to rest under the oak tree.
They could not find flowers, but they made a basket of oak leaves and filled it with berries for the
wise woman. They walked on the rocky pathway.
After a while, the sun went down, the evening wind was resting. Presently the moon and stars
came out. They were growing very tired, but at last they reached the hut on the hilltop where she
lived.
“Look, she is standing at the gate,” said Golden Hair. “So stern she looks.”
“We know that you are a very wise, we wanted you tell us how to make everyone happy.”
Said Golden Hair bravely.
“Please, let us stay together,” said Blue eyes.
As she opened the gate for them, she was seen to smile in the moonlight. After that, the two
little girls were never seen again at the foot of the hill.

The next morning, waving golden-rod and purple aster grew over the hillside. Some people
said that these two bright flowers were two girls on that moonlight night.

Because of its great architectural beauty and an important historical monument both for
Byzantine and Ottoman Empires, Hagia Sophia was choosen as a world heritage site by
UNESCO in 1985. Its function has changed several times in the centuries
The Hagia Sophia, whose name means Holy Wisdom, was constructed by the East Roman
Empire for the Greek Orthodox Christian Church in 360. When Constantinople was occupied
by Latins between 1204 and 1261, the church was adapted to be a Catholic cathedral. After
Sultan Mehmed’s conquer in 1453, Hagia Sophia was renovated into a mosque. Eventually, the
edifice was converted into a museum by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s orders since 1935.
The building measures some 269 feet in length and 240 feet in width. It contains two
floors centered on a giant nave that has a great dome ceiling. An earthquake in 558 caused the
Hagia Sophia's dome to collapse. It was rebuilt to a height of 182 feet, along with smaller
domes, in 562.
Originally, the interior decorations consisted of abstract designs as well as Christians
mosaics on the walls. However, Sultan Mehmed covered the mosaics with plaster instead of
destroying them. Eight massive medallions hung on columns in the nave which have Arabic
calligraphy. The Ottomans also added a mihrab, a minbar, and four enormous minarets in
