past you 2. You catch the ball before it hits the ground (while sitting) 3. The teacher yells
scatter ball.
- 3 ways to get out: 1. You get hit by the dodgeball 2. The person catches your throw 3.

• Then having the students create what they think the 2019 Canadian Food Guide looks
like.
• Having a discussion based on what the students came up with and then looking at the
food guides themselves.
• Then afterwards discussion why changes were made to the food guide, which one is
easier to understand and more inclusive of all diets.
• You can also bring in the American food guide and ask the students to look through and
see what they think and compare it to the Canadian Food Guide.
31
- Students write down their answers on the handout.
- Have at least 10 foods for the students to look at.
Appendix B 1.1
32
• The teacher says to the students “what comes to mind when you think of a healthy
relationship?” Students will then write down a word or words on the post it notes and
come and stick them on the graphic organizer at the front of the class.
• The teacher then says to the students “write down what comes to mind when you think of
an unhealthy relationship?” Students will write down their word or words on the post it
notes and come and stick them on the graphic organizer at the front of the class.
• Leave the graphic organizer up in every class with post it notes available so students can
add or take off ides from the board as they learn.
Active Listening
• You are going to get into partners.
• The partner who is listening, is going to face away from the board. The partner who is
speaking is going to be facing the board to see the topic
• I am going to put up a topic, and you have to effectively communicate with your partner.
Your partner will have to actively listen to you.
• Topics:
• You’ve had an argument with your sibling, and you want someone to talk to about
it. Luckily, your good friend is right in front of you!
• You’ve just accomplished something big in your life (MVP in a sport, big
championship, met a goal you’ve been trying to get). You haven’t had the chance
to tell your friend yet, finally you’ve found them!
33
• Students think about what is most important to them in a relationship and create a
"recipe". The recipe should have at least three “ingredients” (important aspects of a
relationship, for example communication)
• Students will then explain why their ingredients are an important part of a healthy
relationship and why it is important to have healthy relationships.
34
Communication Style Video Activity
• Students will get into partners, watch the videos on the board
• Partners are going to decide what type of person/communication it is. There may be
multiple.
• The students will determine how the character in the video could have spoken more
assertively.
Snowball Activity
• Everyone is going to get a scenario, some of you may get the same one, that is okay.
• Read the scenario quietly to yourself and come up with a way that you might Delay the
situation.
• When everyone is finished, crumple up the paper into a snowball. When I say snowball,
aim for the board on the front counter and throw it.
• Now everyone is going to come up and grab one of the snowballs.
• Go to your seat, read the new scenario and the delay response from the previous person.
• Write a refusal statement in the box.
• When I say snowball, toss the paper back onto the board on the front counter.
• Come and get a new paper, read the scenario and the delay and refusal statements and
complete the negotiation box.
• When I say snowball toss it again. This time everyone is going to go one at a time from
the same spot. Hit the board and I will give you a treat.
• Come and pick up a sheet.
• Read through the scenario and the three responses, and pick which skill works best for the
scenario.
• Get into partners and share your best responses with each other.
• Get with a new partner and share your best responses with each other.
Workout Videos

No equipment required, these workouts are timed so students complete the exercise for x number
of seconds and then move on to the next. This works out great because you can pause the video

Appendix 1.0 – Physical Education
37
Station: Self Toss
What You Need: A partner, a glove and a softball
Purpose: work on catching and throwing between your team mates. Make sure you
are throwing the ball straight up at a level you are comfortable with to catch.
1. Get into partners and stand at a distance that you and your partner feel
comfortable throwing/catching to.
